I can confirm those values; the zeroed area going until 0x23ffff starts in my dump already at 0x44e00. That's a 3dsxl, 4.5.
However, for now I am not aware of any test (beside (upgrading and) writing the dump back) that really guarantees that your flash dump is valid.

i will try soon
what´s the best prog for dump/write nand ? win32diskimager ?

Now, wait a second, are you saying I can just whip up a quick four cable SD card interface using four wires and then dd image my 3DSs firmware? Wow, this is going to be a nice afternoon project for tomorrow or wednesday.

same here

what u will do with thoses backup nand ?
I want to see how the NCSD header has been implemented in a NAND dump, considering I've only seen NCSD headers in 3DS ROMs. I want to see the differences in the partition info stored in the header, and how that relates to the sections in the NAND dump.

Well then, can someone PM me a NAND dump. Langin I don't mean to be rude, but I'll be the judge of whether something is "of use to me".

^_^ If it's of use for you then your awesome.(When I was somewhat younger I put someone else's nand on my wii x3 you can guess what happened so I am a tad protective towards others ^_^ )

But ot you shouldn't be asking about pm'ing you either. Just so you don't get warned. Can't you ask someone yourself trough pm? ;)

Good thinking :)

yes - and anyone who wants good chances to ever run homebrew should do so... imo we only know for sure that consoles up to incl. 4.5. are vulnerable to custom code execution. Who knows if there ever will be further bugs in later FW versions?

Thats illegal mate we can't. it contain copyrighted files. And you have no use of it since it's a console locked thing. :p
Not only that, but the nand flash dump might contain a credit card number/keys/ids/content that is of private nature. Additionally, yellows8 claimed on IRC that each nand flash is encrypted by a console specific key (i.e., a key unique for every console). There is no reason to doubt yellows8 statement, hence a flash dump is useless to anyone else but the console owner (who can use it to return to that firmware version at any time).

Hey guys i plan on sending my 3ds xl to nintendo repair because of wifi causing black screen of death but would like to know if i should do a nand dump. Do you guys think they will update firmware? I also opened my dissembled my 3ds, i do not think it will void my warranty as they cannot really tell.

Is the repair under the warranty? If so you are not allowed to open it else you'll void it and you have to pay.

And yes they will update the 3ds.

It is under warranty but their is no way to tell that you opened it.
It's very unlikely on a normal 3DS (not XL) that you can manage a dump without soldering cables to the test point. The tin-colder is easy noticeable. On a XL it could work because all needed pins are located on the bottom side (as already stated before).

Pogo pin is the catchword!

You could fix it yourself, especially if it has been confirmed that they update the 3DS when they do repairs. iFixit is an amazing place lol
