Hacking N3DS XL 11.9

I have just bought a stock 11.9 N3DSXL and have got the R4i Plus, inserted into my console with the correct files on the flashcart sd card and when I enter the game it just hangs on a black screen, any ideas on why this may be?

Do you mean R4i Gold 3DS Plus?
Your flashcart SD should look like this (from Wood_R4iGold_V1.64.rar):

SD:
├─── __rpg
│.....├── cheats
│.....├── […]will not write all folders
│.....├── ui
│.....├── globalsettings
│.....├── […] and files here
│.....├── updater
├─── _DS_MENU.DAT
├─── [somePlaceForYourRoms]

In any case (no matter what flashcart) Other things to check:

• Is the micro-SD formatted FAT32?
  
• Have you checked the micro-SD for hardware defects/fake? Windows, Linux, OS X
  
• Try another FAT32 formatted micro-SD anyway.
  
• Does the N3DSXL boot any DS software (retails carts or the DS version of “Download Play”)?

Thanks for this, that really helps. My flashcart SD is infact blank apart from 'ntrboot' folder with the ntrboot_flasher_nds.nds on the root.

So I now have a the exact same layout as your showing above with Wood_R4iGold_V1.64.rar, but when when inserting it doesn't recognize a game/cartridge at all, works fine with all my retail carts too.

The internal switch must be set to "D" (DS-mode) for playing games. It should show up as this game (no matter what is on the micro-SD):

When set to "N" (ntrboot) the cart is not shown in the Home Menu.

Good news, got plenty far so far, but when I hold Start and power on to boot into GM9. The top screen shows the logo but the bottom screen stays black/blank.

I've not followed the discussion completely but it seems there is a bug in the latest (1.8.0) release GodMode9 preventing it from starting on some consoles. Cause not know (yet)? See this issue on github:

The previous release should work in any case (until the issue is fixed)
