Hi, I'm looking at purchasing one of the N3DS White Japan Import model with the colored buttons (https://www.amazon.com/New-Nintendo...&qid=1467552684&sr=1-27&keywords=nintendo+3ds). I'm wondering a couple things on this. I know that this can be region unlocked to be able to play all games - using the Cubic Ninja exploit, assuming this comes below 11.0.0, I can downgrade to 9.2.0. This will however not let me play roms on the 3DS which I want to be able to do and I will lose the eshop and online access. Is there CFW I can then install on this to be able to play roms on this device? What would be the best coursed of action to follow on purchasing this model. And what about the Freakyforms deluxe hack? Or is this only for Old 3DS models on 11.0? Any help is appreciated.

I just got one last Sunday and it came on 9.1 and I put a9lh on it pretty quickly. (About an hour and a half)
I recommend following this guide for all of your CFW needs. Luma3DS is the best CFW out there in my honest opinion. https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki
( You don't have to follow the whole guide, you can just make a RedNAND if you want. I say do the whole thing though because it's worth it)
You shouldn't have to worry it being above 10.7 unless it's newly sent out from Nintendo.
OH! You can also still use the eshop access and online features too!

So I have read through that guide and seems easy enough to follow. Question for you, did you region unlock it? If so What did you use? or did you only follow that guide straight out of the box? What you did allows playing roms as well?

Nope! I read Japanese so I didn't really feel the need to change it. If you do region change it you do lose eShop access.
You can use this: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Region-Changing to change the region but please be careful! You're editing the SecureInfo_A file. Not roms, but .cia because they're easier to manage and install directly to my micro sd card. If you want roms (which are .3ds) then you would need to purchase a GateWay or Sky3DS. It's much easier to just download them directly though! ( Psst, use this: http://gbatemp.net/threads/wip-freeshop-open-source-eshop-clone.426573/)

Yes, you can change it, but you can't access the eShop after you do it sadly! :/
I don't speak or read Japanese so I would want to change the language on this - that was what I also meant to include in the original post along with the region unlock portion. The online isn't that big a deal for me. I mainly want it to play roms - but want to make sure that it can after i region unlock and change language to English. However, if only the system itself is in Japanese - but games played can be English, that would be fine with me and I'd leave it Japanese...

Ahh so even with a9lh it's best to leave it in japanese?

Well, that's okay if you want to change it then. You can play games in any language I believe, because Luma3DS CFW ALSO has a language emulation plugin! If you don't feel comfortable with it, then you can switch it to english! :)

It's pretty easy to follow, you'll use internet settings and update settings and that's about it. You can install different region games so they won't be in Japanese!

Ah ok, thank you for the links and answering my questions. I will do some more reading and will have to make a decision on if the imported version is worth it. I do love those buttons quite a bit..

Get the happy home designer edition. It comes in American and only costs about 220 on eBay new. There's no point in getting a jap console when you can just order face plates with HHD edition.

What all do you miss out on if there is no online access if region unlock is done? eshop obviously can't purchase and download games...anything else? multiplayer games i assume...but is that even a big thing on the 3DS?

When you install Luma CFW it will be region unlocked. Some games require an additionnal step to activate dlc, it's explained on Luma wiki: Enable region/language emulation https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Options-and-usage

Problem is: if you FW is 10.6.0 or more, you'll have to use a game to downgrade. And this game needs to be the same region as your console so Japanese. I am not aware of which firmware are the n3ds in Japan.

IF you region change you don't lose online capabilities but you'll not be able to access any eshop (japanese or english) but you can just download from freeshop.

Another warning, if you care about local multi, most game have it region locked, so if you don't region change to US, you'll not be able to play with a fellow US 3ds. You can still use internet multi if you don't want to region change.
