(I posted this in the normal forums but I think it's better suited here)
Hello.
I am in the market for a new 3ds XL (e). I want to (through the cheapest means necessary), set it up so I can have a collection of old DS roms on it, as well as 3ds roms (preferably installed to the home screen).
Now, there is a LOT of technical information out there. If its a guide, I've read it. Here is my plan (will this work?):
Get ooT, and a powersave adaptor, run oothx, and somehow downgrade to 9.2.
At this point, I should be able to take .3ds roms and run them through this, https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-3ds-simple-cia-converter.384559/ and install to the home screen right?
Also, it is my understanding that one can region unlock the 3ds for other region cartridges (i'm american and am going back to america within half a year).
Now for the normal ds games, everyone says get a flashcart. Which one? I primarially want to run japanese roms (learning japanese want those kanji apps)
Thank you for any help and sorry for the rambling tone.

You say CFW, will i have to launch it every time i want to play a game or is it just for installing (or do you completely overwrite the standard firmware)

So, al9h will autoboot, load an emulated nand? and all the installed games (installed via cia) will be a tap away? Also, is there anything special i need re headers?

a9lh boots into a modified sysNAND, emunand is only required during its initial setup.
And I believe as long as you're installing/using a .cia rather than a .3ds you won't have to mess with headers.

EDIT: Although of you decide to go the non-a9lh route you can set up an autoboot with ctrbootmanager to enter your emunand.

And as far as DS games go, I recommend an ordinary supercard DStwo flashcart. I've been using one for quite some time and up to this point it has yet to fail me.

ok. so no header messup. I'm also getting a micro sd card, are all compatible with a9lh/cfw? what size do you guys have? And the DStwo works on the new 3ds/firmware right? will it pop up on in the modified sysnand as a game?
Sorry for all the questions i'm just new (softmodded the hell out of my wii a couple years ago but this is a whole different beast). Thank you!

No worries, it's better to ask and know than try and not be sure about it.
I use a 64GB micro SD with my n3ds running reinand. Although you can also up that to 128GB if you wanted. And to my knowledge all micro SDs should be compatible as long as they're reformatted as FAT32.
And with the flash card you might need to update it if you want to run it on an unmodified sysNAND, as nintendo had tried to patch it for a while. This can be done with a lower firmware dsi or ds lite/fat (or 3ds of it's low firmware) by following the instructions on their main website to perform a card update. Once that's done it'll run on the most recent firmware and likely forever since they're probably more focused on fixing the kernel and gateway/sky/R4.
Once the update is performed it should show up on both sysnand and emunand as Alex storm rider and can be booted normally.

hm ok. I have a lite so upgrading shouldn't be a huge deal. Now to see if i can find a dstwo here in germany :/ (more so a reputable dealer, i've had some issues buying stuff online before) I wish amazon.de had it.
Thank you for everything!

Hm. for dstwo, its at least 40 euro here >_<. are there any other cards that would work? I would be running 9.2 so shouldnt the r4 cards work? or am i crazy :)
