Hasn't the world been deemed to end just about every year since the start of the Cold War? I agree that the Mayan calendar suddenly was strange, but...weren't the Mayans also wiped out? Maybe they simply didn't finish?
I'm not going to be one of those people hiding out in bunkers when the world ends again like it did at the turn of the millennium. Ignore my name, first. =P And, Y2K was probably our best chance at the world ending in a way. Think about it. How much of our society is based on computers and how much of an impact that those computers breaking down would have?
I mean, apparently these computers were important enough for important people to not only call out the problem, but spend many months and tons of money fixing it.
