I'm sorry for your DS. I was so grateful that I did not get a Lite on Xmas 06, instead I got a Phat. Then I traded it in for a Silver DS Lite last February. I'm so happy with it. No fingerprints at all.

That is the reason why I don't buy things on launch day. Something has to be fixed with those things.

Wow, there's dead and then there's... well, dangling by a thread in two pieces :S I can't believe the hinge crack evolves into this while someone is being careful with the system, I thought I was just a cosmetic thing but damn, that's pretty messed up. Can't believe they didn't recall them.

It just depends. At times there can be a lot of pressure on that one hinge. Cause the whole screen is held up by a single hinge attatched to the bottom half of the ds. Im not too surprised, but care should be taken. And if anyone is planning on replacing their ds shell, trust me its a pain, but better than having nintendo fix it

Wow, sorry to hear about this.

My friend has a broken phat with the right hinge missing and there's a round dip on the touch screen (I think he stabbed it with the stylus too hard). Worst of all, the top screen is always white and the bottom screen displays both top and bottom at the same time and you get an ugly merged image.

Wow.. your DS looks EXACTLY the same as mine, it snapped the same exact way, it was also a launch day DS Lite.
it happened almost a year ago.. and actually i decided today to try to fix my old DS lite, so i'm sitting with it here, staring at it.
it also auto turned off quite frequently,and when it snapped, it barely starts anymore, so i'm trying to fix that problem as of now, and i seem to atleast be able to boot it up, and it hasnt turned off yet.. so i'm looking at a replacement shell and/or one of those protective shells that can hold it in place..

anyway.. i'm sorry for your (as well as my) loss ;/

Mine didn't snap THAT badly, but my hinge broke off, and now there is no resistance in holding the screens open. So the top screen "flops" closed. But yeah, THAT would be hard to play now.

my ds light hige broke like that. it was classified as "destroyed". after lots of complaining and explaining (saying it was their fault for that screw tight thing) and they said any polar white DS from like 06 was free for hinge repairs so just call and say it is a launch ds unit

No, it isn't, all the new DS Lite's are okay, for example my Black DS Lite haven't broke apart.

And the old DS just sucks.

I think that the DS phat is still a really good system because of how durable it is. I would miss the brighter screen and thinner shell, but if you have it and nothing is wrong with it, no reason to switch unless youre buying a limited edition ds. Then go all out

I only have a couple of cracks on the hinges, does this mean they know that it will happen?
I think that we got scammed by nintendo

Ive had experiences with that.

I was home after a long day of language school. i decided to play layton 1. when i finished, the hinge was all stiff. i looked at it, and the right hinge (closest to the lights) had snapped. i left it closed until my dad took it to nintendo aus. this isnt the first time my ds has been into service. one to fix the touch screen (bad callibration + scratched screeen) and a faulty hinge i didnt know about. i dont think they fixed the hinge however due to what had happened recently but it didnt take too long and it was free!
