Hacking My 3DS flashcart knowledge is old

I have two 3DS units. One I use for paid games/online and one I use for playing offline backups. You might be asking "why?"

Well because at the early days of 3DS flashcarts, your choices were Gateway, and those didn't support online play. o I'm on 4.5 firmware with an original Gateway 3DS. What do yall recommend in terms of updating?
