i've been able to get upwards of 22fps in wide screen using a remastered (both video and audio) source. quality is wonderful for my nds, i don't expect a 1080i picture quality and neither should anyone else.

Exactly!!

I wouldn't say: QUOTEThe DS has a small and terrible LCD so video playback is poor also.
I'm really satisfied with quality of screens and how movies look.....It's really enough to watch it on-the-go!
Especially cartoons!

You might be content with the quality, but others might not be and would find watching multimedia unbearable.

I watch anime (mostly) on my DS and when its subtitled...that can be a real bitch to read on the tiny screen so screen size sometimes gets a bit silly. I wish you could split the image/video over two screens sometimes, so as to have the subtitles on the bottom screen. Come to think of it, i would love it if Moonshell had an EQ to cut or boost frequencies..!!

However, with some good 'in-ear' style earphones and properly encoded media i cant see the problem for on the go vid/tunes. If quality really matters, buy something else and let that suit your needs. Dont think poorly of a 'freely available homebrew which adds functionality to a hand held gaming console'.

wtf? subtitle on bottom screen and vid on top? wat a horrible idea xD
well there is a subtitle input option, so just open up the subtitle file, and change the size to w/e u want.

The sound quality worsens around 150% or so sound in moonshell. Is it supposed to be better with good headphones?
i don't think so. i usually keep mine at 140% ish
Anything above 100% is going to be software amplification, so yeah it's going to sound distorted unless your original audio source has a severely low volume level. Leave the hardware slider at 100% and only increase in software if you have to.

As for the original topic, until this Christmas I've never had a "real" mp3 player. I used GBA GSM Player for a year, then switched to Moonshell once I got a DS Phat and a Supercard miniSD. Since then, the DS has been my mp3 player, either through Moonshell or LMP-ng (depending on whether I want to shuffle just one folder or the entire card). It also worked well for video playback as long as I wasn't trying to view it in direct sunlight, and it got me through several long plane and bus trips. Moonshell is far from useless.

Sure, if you've got a laptop and a high-capacity mp3 player already, then Moonshell won't do you much good. But for the rest of us it serves a decent purpose.

Still have no mp3 player

(well i had 2 broken ones before and then i gave up on them lol).

Also I use DX earphones

I don't see how moonshell is overrated, i quite like it. It's very usefull for movies, and music. I just dont use it that often since the supercard OS is basically modified moonshell.

[...] if you remaster the source before encoding you can limit the amount of dithering caused by the lossy dpg format. i've been able to get upwards of 22fps in wide screen using a remastered (both video and audio) source.[...]
You can easily do original framerate with widescreen movies (no problems up to 256*144), that means movements are a lot less choppy. If you have 24 FPS (24/1.001 FPS usually) source, use 24 FPS, otherwise your encoder is making a pulldown, which has an impact on smootheness. From my experience most people don't notice that, but choppyness *is* there, a trained eye will see that (once you noticed it's quite hard to ignore it, believe me...). If you adjust bitrate accordingly you won't have any more compression artefacts.

Post processing the picture has very little impact on resulting picture quality from my experience (if you have a good source to begin with), especially since dithering is done by Sakura itself, independently of picture. May I ask what you're doing, though?

Overrated? Why?
People just do what they fuck want. If they like to use their DS as media center, why bother?
This topic is just here for troll, I don't see another good reason...

moonshell is great for short videos, like episodes of the simpsons etc. on the go.

but i wouldn't watch a 2 hour movie on this little screen.

Which you chose to post publicly.

and? im allowed to post my opinion and it isnt troll cuz it would be locked by now
By posting your opinions publicly, you are inviting others to comment on them and offer criticism. You can't just turn around and say that their opinions are invalid because they differ from your own.

I'm just saying that the "STFU" part was out of line. If you have the right to post your opinions, so do we.

Given that my cart's loader menu is a modified version of Moonshell, I rather like it

Noone's mentioned text and image files, but I find it rather useful for viewing those. I don't really use my DS out of the house so I haven't played with movies much.

the only part of moonshell i think is good is the book/text reader

After reading 3 pages of this thread and not finding it:
Who cares if you use the app at all? The thing that matters here as well is that is is simply a great application. Well written and does the job great. It also was quite inventive at the time, and possibly still is. Yes I pretty much never use it anymore, but I don;t use my DS a lot anymore either, does that mean it is overrated? Same goes for a damn large amount of things.

The app is made to enhance the uses of your gaming system, it works perfectly fine for that. Same goes for DSorganize It isn't overrated, unless your rating something is deciding how usefull it is TO YOU.

If that is the case then apparently, it is overrated for you (and me mind you, as I hardly ever use it anymore).

You are completely right!

darnoc, don't flame, and don't flamebait!
As you see, many people disagree with your statement that Monshell is overrated, maybe you see it like that, but others apparently don't!

I think Moonshell is Perfect.
