until MHW this was the ultimate console MH release, online and in japan at least, and dispite being on multiple consoles (PC / Xbox 360 / PS3 / PS4 / Wii U / PS Vita ) i cant seem to find a downloadable version for either the wii u or ps3 let alone an eng patched version, wikipedia states this is playable on singleplayer, so is there any way to play it on a wii u?

If I remember correctly, frontier Z is just an update to the JAP Frontier G. It is available on NUS (main game: 000500001014DA00) with the (update: 0005000E1014DA00). You can play it by changing regions and using a Japanese VPN -- however -- "Capcom recently announced it's dropping Xbox 360 and Wii U support for Frontier Z come August 1, 2018" so you won't get much from it.
