Hacking Modding Firmware

I was just wondering about how exactly I could do this, or if it's even possible. I actually have an M3 Simply, but I think the R4 uses the same type of firmware in this regard. I just want to mess around with _DS_MENU.dat and _DS_MENU.sys. I'm almost certain this is where all of the firmware data is stored, and I just wanted to try and edit them to change like some of the text like for the icons so change like 'Multimedia' on the icons page to '3-in-1 Tool' or stuff liek that. Any1 who knows how to edit these files, help would be greatly appreciated
