Gaming Modded Xbox 360 unable to read disc

Alright, so my cousin's modded Xbox 360 has suddenly stopped to read discs

While they were playing SF4, right in the middle of battle, the game stops and is unable to read discs. He puts in retail bought game and it shows unable to read. All games can't even start now, just unable to read.

They tried multiple fixes and so I was wondering what would you do/Solution to this problem?

Give the laser a clean, if that doesn't sort it, buy a new laser or drive.

Oh his friend says that I have to get a DVD disc with the same serial number as the xbox? Or can we just get a random xbox 360 dvd drive and it would work

You'll have to stick his key in it and if it's a different model drive, spoof it as well.
