Hi all,

I am waiting for stock to arrive got Switch 2 but i'm not sure whether to go for the MKW bundle or not.

I understand that its a digital copy but i'm worried about having to go online in the future to download the game, or accidentally updating the console, or being forced to update when re-downloading the game.

I plan on updating day 1 patch and micro sd express patch and then putting the device in offline mode.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks,

The only argument (aside from having a fancy dust collector in your shelf) speaking for the physical cartridge would be the ability of preservation, should Nintendo ever decide to discontinue the Online Services for Switch 2 in 5-8 years from now and take away the ability to use the Download Code included in the bundle. However, the argument has several flaws:

  • The cartridge is stuck on Version 1.0.0, with all it's lack of features and bugs included
  • No safe medium is eternal. Cartridges will degrade eventually, and the ones from more recent consoles been doing so faster than older consoles as Nintendo and others keep using cheaper production methods. For example, many of the Pokemon ORAS cartridges no longer work.
  • It could happen that Nintendo implements Online DRM down the road and just straight remotely killswitches the console when they are done with it. They have the legal ground for this now and Ubisoft is getting away with turning all of it's previous titles unplayable now as well (Example: You can no longer play Assassins Creed 2 despite it still being sold on Steam).

Realistically the only way we can achieve preservation in the long run is through people dumping the cartridges and online downloads. So in that regards, you may as well bite into the bullet and take the bundle with the download code.

I went with the MKW bundle and then sold the code. In my case I was a bit worried the seals arrived cut, but everything was there and the code worked.

I'm willing to vote with my wallet on keeping physical media going, so I whaled out and pre-ordered the bare switch 2 and a boxed copy of MKW straight from nintendo, because they consider me a "nice person" worthy of their official pre-order process for some reason.

i went physical, cause i dont know if they will implement some kind of verification where you will have to connect to the internet after x amount of time to continue playing the digital version, so didnt want to risk it.

As long as you don't delete the game, you won't need to redownload it. If you need more space (unlikely that you will max out the 256 GB internal with the limited amount of games that launch FW will be able to run though) get a MicroSD Express card. If your MicroSD Express card fills up and you still need more space, you can move files off the SD onto a PC or whatever. As long as you have the files somewhere, you'll never need to redownload them.
I would be more worried about (you or someone else) accidentally connecting online and getting a forced update. But that's always a concern, regardless of whether your games are physical or digital.

Personally, since Mario Kart is a multiplayer focused game, that you can come back to again and again, I think it's handy to have it always on the console so I don't need to switch carts just to play a round or two. But that's of course subjective. But with the limited internal storage it definitely makes sense to fill up the internal storage with that type of game, and have more single player or story based games on cart, the ones that you won't play again for a while after you finish them.

That's generally how digital releases work... After a while it asks you to login again to renew the license.
Why not import the Filipino release which is both?
Sounds interesting. Do you have a link?

I don’t like the inconvenience of having to swap out game carts to play different games especially when playing in docked mode. I get the whole collector aspect of physical media but personally I don’t really care. As mentioned above, physical media also has a shelf life. I went for the digital version bundle and saved money doing so.

Nintendo offers a repair service for cartriges (dont know if they will do that for switch 2 or if they will discontinue the service one day)
