Ok so i finally got a working dvdrip of 2009 Avatar but it is an MKV file and my Samsung dvd player wont play it so i was wondering if there is a way to convert it to

AVI without losing any quality its a really amazing movie and i would love to watch it on a bigger screen then my computer.

i would rather have a program that would just convert it to .avi without making it lose its quality or a link to a real dvdrip torrent or something

avidemux is great for converting from mkv to divx/xvid you just gotta select the codecs you need and save very fast on a core2 duo

well on avidemux you open your mkv, or other format and on the right is some options like video and audio i choose mpeg4 (lavc) and mp3 (lame) for best compatibility and quality

AVI is not a single video type, you could end up with a video that won't play on the DVD player.

DVD flick will convert it to THE OFFICIAL DVD FORMAT, so you can be SURE it'll work at the best quality a DVD can be. It converts, you burn, you play, everybody's happy.

im using dvd flick right now i hope it works i love the movie but if it doesnt play in my dvd player through a usb what should i do i dont want to burn it to a disc just play it straight from usb

step 1 open avidemux
step 2 open the file with avidemux
step 3 if it asks about b frames say no
step 4 select video type "MPEG-4 ASP"
step 5 select audio type "MP3"
step 6 save as and wait for it to encode the video

It asks me to rebuild the frames or something???? and when i click save it wants to save as an .mkv file still

For the issue of quality, you'll most likely lose it. MKV generally is packaged with H.264 and I assume HD content(Did you get a BluRay rip?). There's no way some DVD/XVid/DivX player will play HD resolution content, and it won't play H.264 either. This was enough reason for me to build a hometheatre for my HD content. If you are converting an entire movie that is HD/H.264, you better have a decent processor as well.

Now, another problem arises. AVI is JUST a container, and it applies for all video types including MKV. What matters most is what's in the container, meaning you want to convert MKV with PROBABLY H.264 video to AVI with XVid/DivX so it's compatible with your player. VOB is ANOTHER video format, which is an official format for DVD-Videos, so it's a guaranteed format to work since there are standards set. Although, there are DVD players that accept AVI with XVid or DivX. As for your audio, you can probably go for MP3... Though you'd lose the 5.1 audio assuming it has that. You'd probably need to go AC3? I believe was the format for multi channel stuff.

Easiest way would be to convert it to VOB with the standard settings I'd assume. No need to mess with other formats and bitrates and resizers in other programs.

Also, what do you mean play it by USB on your DVD player? Does your DVD player have USB ports so you can play videos off of it?

Yes it has a usb port on it that lets me play stuff from my USB drive i think avidemux is working its encoding it right now so will i be able to play this on my dvd player

you just name it to a .avi when encoding
