I have mine disconnected since who knows when, so a quick question, for every switch game, does the s2 have to connect to internet to download some info for the game? or with that first update that allowed playing switch games, main games like zelda and such will work?

how long have you been using the mig on switch 2?
Since day one, but I read (/red/) a LOT before even turning the console on.

A

LOT.

At the moment, it is safe to play Mig on firmware 1.2.0/1.2.1/1.2.2, but how long this will last is unknown.
A suggestion, mate: never say "it's safe" or "It's sure" in a public forum. Posts tend to age very badly.
Instead, say: "for me" is safe....

In my experience, it only downloads an update the first time it runs, then it works fine.
Also, in my experience, my console is always connected to internet (I'm using only personal-owned-games dumps on my console)
Run away from those torrents that have hundreds of games.

Temped to try but don't want to risk online ban since I use my switch 2 a lot.

I'm curious what happens with games like pokemon violet, do you need some sort of switch 2 patch or does it just outright run better? Applying one of those free switch 2 upgrades to games you don't own sounds risky.

if you don't own the game then you're getting banned. simple as

So what is the point of the mig then?
backing up all your legally owned games so you can have them all in one cartridge instead of needing to keep a bunch of separate games around

or playing the base version of pirated games offline and accepting that that console can never go online again

from what I'm told the switch 1 games with free switch 2 upgrades refuse to run without the update installed though. but it's possible to install updates on a banned unmodded switch with local version sharing, although the switch 1 version of the updates are seemingly not compatible with the switch 2. some here have tried, they are able to share updates from a modded switch 1 to the switch 2, except for games that have free switch 2 upgrades, those fail to share. I guess those games have two separate versions of the same update, one in switch 1 format for the switch 1, and one in switch 2 format for the switch 2 that unlocks extra capabilities you dont get on the switch 1, and the switch 2 cant run the switch 1 version of the updates

Potentially a silly question, but how do I know what Firmware is on my cart / whether my Mig updated successfully?

From the official FAQ:

How can I see firmware version?

Since firmware version 1.0.9 the current firmware version is saved to the .nxindex file on microSD.
You can open this file in a hexeditor and see the current firmware version at the end of the file.

After updating firmware, the firmware version will only be visible once you switch a ROM.
To avoid any confusion when trying to identify the firmware version from an old nxindex file,
We recommend you delete it after update so it will be automatically recreated.

That is good news. But people should always clarify if they are using their own legit dumps or high seas dumps. It will help to know.
I explained my use case in several messages on this forum, but probably not on this thread.

In my case, always, ALWAYS, (wait, is there any bigger font?) ALWAYS use my own personal game carts being dumped through a modded S1. Never used torrent XCIs.

And I honestly think that's the key: MIG is very good in transparently translating the original cart data into the console. The problems come when you use a game cart that is being used by thousands of people.

At the moment, there are no problems. So far, there are no bans for using dumps from a torrent.
A user from a Russian forum has been using Mig with dumps from a Russian torrent on a Switch 2 for over a month (since July 15):
Everything is fine. Update 20.2.0, everything is the same. I update through eShop. No ban. Games are still from the rutracker.
It is undeniable that using public dumps is unsafe, but there is no need to categorically state that there will be an inevitable ban for this.

I wouldnt risk it personally but I can see how it could avoid a ban, if it's a less popular game. you could share a legit cart with 20 friends and nintendo would see 20 different consoles using that same game, and you dont get banned for just sharing games. but they could still see in the logs that the cartridge was inserted and played during a specific time period, and could see that more than one console has been playing that "cartridge" during the same time period, even if everyone involved had only been playing it while offline

and since it's not possible to change the actual internal clock value, you can only change the offset, it's difficult to spoof that. unless the logs just go by system time and don't track the actual rtc value (plausible, because you could just set up a console without setting up a connection, and never enable internet time sync. therefore the internal clock value can not be relied upon and they have to use user-specified system time)

in which case they might not go by the time at which a cartridge was inserted and played, because two consoles with the wrong time could show the same date and time in the logs, when in reality the cartridge was only used in one console at a time. you wouldnt have to worry about that then. but if they see that 2000 consoles have registered and played a specific game in the same week though then it becomes more obvious that it's a pirated copy (it's physically impossible to pass around a legit cartridge between 2000 users in a short enough time frame lol)

I have a question that would really appreciate if anyone could answer.

I've been following the thread since it started, but there's still something I don't quite understand. I'm thinking about buying a second hand switch 2 that is sold by a friend and use it only for switch 1 games. I have a great collection of originals but would like to try some from the famous russian torrent using Mig Swith v2.

My question is: if I update to latest firmware when I get it, would I need to update the firmware ever gain to play switch 1 games? I mean, the state of switch 1 games on the switch 2 can change with future switch 2 updates? Or compatibility is 100% and everything is ok with current latest firmware?.

Thanks in advance!

New switch 1 games may (and eventally probably will) require an update in the future to play in the switch 1 and 2. Although there is no way of knowing for certain....but every current game made for the switch 1 will work on current firmware without update.

Thanks for the clear answer. Using Mig Switch 2, I have read every where that it is not possible to get games updated, I don't mind about DLC. Is it still the case? I think so, but perhaps I have missed something over the last months.

Update: According to copilot, one can download the sw1 game update from external sources and applied to the game to have it updated but, it seems very odd to me. Certificates won't match... don't know, perhaps things have changed. If you could confirm it I would really appreciate it.

Hey guys! another question. Is there anyway to force a game in the mig switch to be recognized the first one? It would be nice to be able to have a bit of control over the order the games appear when pressing the change game button.

It runs a lot better. The animations are no longer 5 FPS and the lag spikes are gone. It didn't require an update, they probably already knew about the Switch 2 when making the game so they designed it to scale with the hardware.
