Hacking Mario kart DS cheats question

if the cheats working correctly you can press it at any time and the blue shell (most people use) will pop up in the box and you just launch it.

What about the 'Always have...' code? can you use the item on and on and on all the way through the race without loosing it?

btw: you cant get a code for the blue shell. I'm getting my codes here.
