A lot of people ask me if it's possible to have old arcade games on the Vita and i'm really not sure. I've never messed with it before so just looking for advice really on what is good. What to use or avoid etc.

Thanks!

Yep, some games working with the retroarch which contains mame cores. Google this : "Mame 2003 Reference Set: MAME 0.78 ROMs, CHDs, and Samples".
I'm using this pack, and the games are usually working. (KillerInstinct and other "high-powered" will not .. )
Also cps1, cps2 emulated games working fine, and most of cps3 but with glitchy sound. At these I'm using FB alpha 2012 or MAME 2003-Plus Experimental core(s) with related bios files.
Also neogeo and others working fine, but i had problem to get proper roms at neogeo (default sets were glitchy at me). Garou and metalslug serie liked to run weird way (freezing, delayed response time and random funny things).
