Making sure someone's pregnant.. ?

Ok, say my mate's girlfriend is 1,5 months late and he said he's used contraception all the while ( of course we know they're not 100% safe ) - but we can't use this as an indication that she's pregnant... right ?

I'm just wondering if there are ways to make sure that she is or she isn't ?

Dont you have to be at least 3 months down the line for the pregnancy test to work properly.. ? This is something my mate told me so I'm not really sure myself =(
