Homebrew Making a platfomer. 2D or 3D?

You could use 2d for backgrounds and 3d for sprites and effects too, so you won't have the 256sprites limit
 
Yeah, like LeRodeur said, you could use 3d for sprites.
Also you can make a 2D game (gameplaywise) and still have 3D effects going on in the background.
Like Donkey Kong Wii or the later Legendary Starfy games.

Yes, but if the 3d effects can be in the background, they can't be behind it actually (because 3d is rendered on the background 0)

In that situation it depends on your goals. 3D, if done right, can be a lot more immersive and that's what hooks a lot of people... but if it's 2D, then the time taken to flesh out an area will be a lot smaller, and the same amount of work can go into a game with more levels/content (n terms of numbers).
