Luma running on SD

Is there any reason i would want to not boot luma3ds boot from internal memory, and let it boot luma only from SD?

I was thinking, to let my kids play with cartridges and I play all the good stuff with luma on SD. That way they cant accidentally brick the 3ds with homebrew stuff.

But what would be the downsides of doing this?

Doesn't really matter. If you're worried about your kids messing with homebrew just have a separate SD card for them that doesn't contain any of the dangerous homebrew.

Also if you use an emuNAND on their SD it keeps them from messing with your save data.
