You should never have to do a system/kernel/dashboard update so as to use a newer drive firmware.

It was however suggested in a few tests following the bannings last year that a fully updated system may well end up not being banned so I guess that is the reason such a thing is suggested.

Until a mod comes along and merges the thread splitvid is necessary but ssv2 is just nice, I prattled on about it earlier today:
