Hi guys, quick question here. I have a launch Wii that currently has 2.2U on it. I'd like to get the features of at least version 4.0, and also install hackmii, homebrew channel, and usbloader.

I've read elsewhere that the simplest solution is to do a system update from the New Super Mario Bros Wii disc, which would bring me to 4.1 w/ boot2v4, and then I could just install bannerbomb and hackmii on that. Is this true? Also, are there any other games that can be used for the same update? I've never done the hack before, but think I get the jist of it. I have a 2gb sd card with bannerbomb v1 and hackmii installer 0.6 ready to go, just need to make sure I get the system updated correctly

Thanks for help in advance!

Why not just follow the sticky guide in here?
It will update your Wii to 4.2 and enable you to do anything with your Wii, that is currently possible

Wow, can't believe I missed that one. Don't I feel like a noob.
Looks a little more complicated than the one I was going to use but should be fine... and save me $8 at the rental place

Thanks a bunch!

out of curiosity though, is the NSMBW update also a viable option?

I tried to follow the guide in the link too but I found out that bannerbomb isn't compatible with system menu version 2.x, and I have 2.2U. The site even stated that it's only compatible with 3.0-4.2. I asked the same question in another topic and what others suggested was to get a recently released game with update to upgrade my 2.2U to 4.x then follow the guide in that link again.

ahh hmm so back to where I started then, I suppose.... is the info about new super mario bros correct (4.1), and are there any other games that would work? The last (and only) game I purchased for Wii so far is Twilight Princess

I heard any game released within the last two years should work because they require system update to 3.x-4.x. (So games like super mario galaxy 1 and super smash brawls should do.) I think I will go to the local Gamestop to look for cheap used games to get the system update, then come back and follow the softmod guide. The other option would be to wait a bit longer for them to release a guide that's compatible with system menu 4.3 so that I can just update my system via internet.

You can use Twilight Princess to hack your Wii too!
Just follow the steps described on wiibrew (see above) to run the HackMii installer.

aha good point, been so long I forgot about that one.
trying now...

ok thats odd, I got through the update steps, and when I rebooted its still 2.2U with homebrew channel still on there.

When it was doing the system update System Menu-NUS-v481.wad it told me "I will not install on wrong region" but then it said everything was successful

edit: 2nd try, didn't give that message this time. continuing...

Did you follow each step?
Do not alter or skip any step! Just do everything it asks you exactly as described!

FIRST install IOS70-64-v6687.wad
THEN install System Menu-NUS-v481.wad
continue with the guide by installing the other wad files (23 files) and the modify section

yes thats how I did it exactly both times. didnt work the first time, but second try everything worked and it is now officially 4.2U

on to modifying...

alright got the hacks all set! big thanks to everyone who helped
biggrin.gif

does WiiConnect24 do anything bad to hacks or is it safe to re-enable it once finished?

edit: hm, shop channel is saying system update needed.... did something go wrong with the shop patch or does it need something new now that 4.3 is out?

You can enable it, if you want to.
To me, it's just annoying that the Wii does not power off but keeps certain components under voltage. (like USB ports, especially annoying if you use aUSB-powered HDD for USB Loading)

If you installed Priiloader aswell, you could activate an option that allows you to enable WC24 while the Wii still shuts down completly.

It will just send you a message on the Wii Message Boards asking if you want to update to new versions of the system Menu. It will NOT update without your permission. It's quite safe to leave it on.

DOP-shop to fix the shop channel.
Weather needs WIiconnect24 on.
Use cfg-loader for backups from usb.
Use either Darkcorp or Neogamma to load your disc backups.

awesome thanks I'll check all those apps out.
I actually did turn Wiiconnect24 back on but weather still wasn't working... oh well not a big deal.
tried a backup on usb and its working very nice, so I'm happy
