On the regual Ds I had a R4 card, what's a good one for 3DS? Gateway sounds good but way to pricey for me. Any other tips?

Money isn't super tight, but $100 is way more then I wanna pay. Is that about the same deaL? Didn't know 3DS had that option. Same more or less as a PSP? I used to run that back in the day.

its only in its infancy at the moment but its coming along in leaps and bounds, search for patched rxtools or pasta cfw and see whats available to you.

http://www.modchipsdirect.com/ has gateway for $64.99 + $4.50 shipping. It ships from California so it's pretty fast within the US.

If you need microsd cards aswell I bought 2 of these ones http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Micr...rd-2GB-4GB-8GB-16GB-32GB-64GB/1237877283.html you can select shipping from US and it should get you within a week, they work in my gateway and sky3ds so no need to worry about the compatibility of them you can buy a 32gb for $13.99 with free shipping.

The total for the Gateway and the 32gb card would come to $83.48 which isn't alot when you consider how much you'll save on games.

I should also add if your firmware is above 9.2 your only option would be a sky3ds.

I'm on 9.8.0 FW, don't think theres a CFW for that is there? Didn't see it with looking around anyway.

Edit: Is Gateway just the best one? How are the other flash cards? Like I said I had an R4 before, I liked it just fine for a normal DS

With firmware 9.8 your ONLY option for 3DS roms is Sky3DS. Literally nothing else will work for you to play pirates games. (Except for QQ3DS which is just a clone of Sky). Gateway won't work, CFW won't work, MT-Card won't work, etc.

There anyway to rollback an update? I just got the DS from someone else and let it do its update thing. Does reformatting the card roll the FW back?

Nope, if you're at 9.8 you're stuck there unless you have a backup of your NAND which I can guarantee you don't.

All Sky does is play .3DS roms. Which isn't a bad thing. It's a little pricey though, but just think about how much you'd spend otherwise and it becomes worth it. However, you need something called a private header to safely get online using Sky but you'll need either a Powersave and a retail game to get one or you can buy it from someone who has a Gateway who can rip one for you (I'd be willing to do this for you.)

Overall, not a bad investment.

Sky3DS any good then? I don't remember seeing its name when I was looking before.
It does the job just fine if all you want to do is play games. Whenever a new game comes out they have to update the template file before you can play it though, and there's no way to update the template on your own.

Sky3ds only plays 3ds roms. It's pretty much the exact same thing all the free custom firmwares can do.

Only advantage is sky works on newest firmware (9.8) while custom firmware requires 9.2 or below

My recommendation:
-Buy a used console. They are pretty much the same price as a sky3ds
-set up custom firmware on <9.2 3ds.
-Use your current 3ds for legit stuff.

Custom firmware also uses console header when playing online so no risk of ban (unless Nintendo changes how they check for roms)

There shouldn't be a risk of banning if you use a header from your own rom dump as far as I have read

Which is difficult for a sky3ds user to obtain

If the system is >9.2 you can do with with just a sky3ds and gw launcher.dat. Put OOT on the sky3ds, restore save to the gateway one and run the exploit, no gateway needed.

Most people who buy sky3ds are going to be over 9.2
