New speed cameras to use satellite technology

Speed cameras which use a satellite positioning system and number plate recognition technology to track vehicles have been tested in England.

The system was tried out on Salter Road in Southwark, south London and on the A374 in Cornwall.

Details of the tests were revealed in evidence to the House of Commons Transport select committee by PIPS Technology, which devised the system,

A Home Office spokeswoman declined to comment on the trials.

The SpeedSpike system uses automatic number plate recognition and GPS to capture the positions of cars and then calculate an average speed over a distance.

I came in here thinking we'd shot Jade Goody's coffin into outer space!

What!
An Apache is a pretty good speeding deterant. Slow down or get a hellfire up your tailpipe.
Uhh...Wut? Isn't that illegal? Why would you shoot speeding drivers?
I knew I shouldn't have started this conversation...

[mofaz]HA! IS FUNNY BECAUSE IS OVERKILL!![/mofaz]

(that and it looks to me like the massive Apache is trying to hide behind that bush)

I would be suprised if this is for looking at cars, probably for monotoring everything we do, since cellphones, ip, credit cards, cameras and birth DNA is not enough.

another way to persecute the little man, the way society is going if your not rich and powerfull then you wont be able to fart without getting prosecuted for it while the real villans get off scot free, they wont pursue them because it would cost too much money and man power to bring them down.

Okay, the amount of useless, pointless whining in this thread is staggering. People who haven't the foggiest idea of what this proposed project does or how it works or how much it is going to cost cry and complain about how the government is wasting money on "denying" the "basic human right" to drive like a reckless moron. Boo hoo hoo, they're watching you. Big deal. Monitoring your speed is not an invasion of privacy as long as they don't shove a speedometer up your ass and secure it with staples.

I for one am very much in favor of enforcing traffic laws with cameras, satellites, helicopter-mounted autocannons and scrotum-mounted electro shockers. Anyone complaining about a system that reports traffic violations is either planning on driving like a retarded monkey himself (and doesn't want to get caught), or admittedly wouldn't mind being run over in traffic, is a reckless idiot in both cases and should simply be locked up at the spot, or simply hit by a car.

i'm all for proper monitoring of the roads as well, but i do think the money could have been spent better elsewhere. its one of the last things they should be doing in most if not all countries imo. every country has a lot more, higher risk problems than people speeding.
