Now would be a good time for developers of title installers to check the NSP permission bits before installing, and warn the user if any dangerous bits are set.

In particular, if bit 63 in the permissions bitmask is set, the application has full access to everything.

hactool supports listing the permissions of the NPDM file, so you should be able to check it with hactool first.

nsps converted from the scene releases are just as safe though. being an xci doesnt make it any more safe, a reliable release in either format is safe and a not reliable one isnt.

Given that OG is admin at a certain popular Switch piracy Discord channel that people generally trust, I want to believe it isn't true. However, it raises serious trust issues regarding anything posted there in future if they did indeed make bricker. Nobody gives a damn who originally made the code, the only thing that matters is who decided to trick people into using it.

It is true. That's a bad move from both of them, which was initially targeting DU stealer/leechers.
However, why did nobody backup their keys and/or full NAND as it is ALWAYS WRITTEN AT THE BEGINNING of all legitimate tutorials ? If it's a recoverable brick, it's not really a major issue as you have your NAND backup that you can simply restore.

In this case, some people didn't acknowledge the risk they were taking in running homebrews and/or pirated games on their console.
If you chose to use your device outside of the original manufacturer guidelines, and it went wrong, it's entirely the user/consumer that is responsible. If one doesn't know the risk in running pirated software, that's his problem. And this can happen with PC gaming or using pirate software on PC (bad crack/keygen, files behind paid wall or making you download malicious software, ransomwares...)

Most of the people were probably "told" (or read) several times that the essential step to NOT miss is to have backup of whatever is backup-able, although they ignored it. It's very unfortunate whoever they might be but I believe it was sufficiently spoonfed and advertised that things can go wrong when using pirated stuff...

I agree with you but I don't consider this a fair analogy. Breaking into a house even though it's open still is illegal.
If someone offers to sell an universal key (i.e. you can enter any house), you buy it, and you use it for illegal things, it's still your responsibility, not the seller's.

The brick NSP itself might be illegal, but it's not the point: the user chose to download a pirated backup of a game (which is illegal if they don't have the original game), and they used it in a way not planned by the device manufacturer. It's their sole responsibility.

Yeah, OG did it and Arc (and the other people in the WNX discord) don't care and are backing him and banning anyone who asks about it or talks about it.

This person, regardless of intent or reason, created something to intentionally brick people's switches and destroy the things they own. And people are defending him. I can't wrap my head around that.

Anyone who dislikes what happened can leave. OG doesn't upload nsp's and what he did was a one time thing to attack REMOVED. Not the users. Anyone who hates him can hate him. But he's a staff member not an uploader.

This isn't the first time OG has done some really messed up stuff either.

Even worse is the people trying to blame them, going "you should have had a backup". Yeah, they should have, but that doesn't make what OG did okay in any way, shape, or form.

UPDATE: Legitimate Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! NSPs are dropping. Lower your guards but make sure to have a NAND backup and verify if the NSP is legit just incase fake NSPs are still being spread.

Most likely the same will happen for Smash due to it being so hyped so be on the lookout for that.
