EDIT JULY 2017: 90% of this thread (except the last pages) is from last winter when 5.5.2 was just pure speculation, don't read it and don't quote old posts, I just upped it to friendly rub into people's face that Cassandra happened to be right and 5.5.1 wasn't supposed to be the Wii U final firmware (but on the other hand, NNU patcher still works so haxchi is still possible from 5.5.1)

Just found out about the 11.3 update for the 3ds.
Good thing the 3ds (if it's below 11.3) can be hacked with an offline entry point (soundhax).

That's not true for haxchi on the WiiU. To use haxchi (or the even more handy CBHC) you need to be able to BUY (if you heard about the latest user who bricked, you'll know why I put it in caps for good measure) a suitable DS game off the eShop. To access the eShop, you need to be on the lastest firmware (EDIT: except if there's a working workaround like "NNU patcher" after the hypothetical new firmware is out). If a firmware above the current (5.5.1) comes out in the coming weeks, you're screwed.

Now, before 11.3, we could just assume Nintendo would let go last gen consoles and not bother to patch holes.

But now, there's a strong mild cyclical indication the WiiU could be the next in line after the 3DS. EDIT: THE INDICATION BEING THE 3DS BEING UPDATED WITH SPECIFIC PATCHES TO THWART HACKING, AS A SYMPTOM OF NINTENDO'S CURRENT ATTITUDE, NO REAL SOURCES OR RUMORS, THIS IS 100% PURE UNADULTERATED SPECULATION

Be safe and haxchi your Wii U today, then set up the DNS to block upadtes (or disable networking altogether if you don't play online).

Where is this strong indication?

Pfft~ the Wii U is EOL. Even if they do make one big update to kill homebrews, that will most likely be the last update forever. From there it's just a waiting game for a new exploit to be found. Once a system is dead, the hackers have complete free range over it.

This is just speculation, why would Nintendo waste money and resources on a dead console

It's 100% speculation but now we have something to work with (11.3 on 3DS) to make a slightly more educated guess.

The odds changed. It's just more probable than before. People need to be at least aware of it.

Do you have any idea how many updates there have been for 3DS since the Wii U's last update? Where were you when all those updates came around.

11.3 being out on 3DS and patching (most of?) the holes
Those patched were cracked wide open within a day... so your logic is a little flawed.
Not to mention, with Nintendo's history, the more they patch, the bigger flaws they leave behind, trust me, nothing is unhackable

Also basing if off of a 3DS update, the console itself is still actively having games made for it, I mean sure the Wii-U MAY get one more update, but honestly as I said, nothing is unhackable, especially Nintendo

Waiting months or years for a "5.5.2" exploit while
others play BoTW sounds like a plan.
Wow~ You mean like the years people had to wait before? Kids these days.

You certainly have a point but it was not 2017 in full next gen (switch) era with a big hyped game (BoTW wiiU) around the corner.
Better give people the chance to reflect on this.

To purposedly inflict it upon oneself is a different thing.

I'd find that insulting you wouldn't say the following games were worth shooting out an update for. All these games were post 5.5.1 btw

- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
- Pokkén Tournament
- Star Fox Zero & Guard
- Paper Mario: Color Splash
