Blade - I'm still mad at myself that it took me until last year to watch this for the first time. I would've loved the crap out of this if I saw it in my childhood. Either way, I love this movie, very happy to revisit it.

Blue Velvet - Of course, had to watch a Lynch movie after his passing, and I just learned that today is his birthday. Blue Velvet is fantastic, it felt like a prequel to Twin Peaks. Several similarities: small town vibes, mystery thriller, murder, bizarre, disturbing, haunting, it felt like you were getting pulled into a strange world, a dream-like plane of existence. Some actors who would be in Twin Peaks were in this one, most prominently Kyle MacLachlan. Dennis Hopper was amazing as Frank Booth, the main villain of the movie. He was scary, violent, perverted, and psychotic. Young Laura Dern was a treat in this, pretty much the purest character in the movie, though one flaw in the character is how she did Mike dirty. Not that Mike was a likable person. Dern's character had a really nice monologue about a dream she had, it seemed like an elaborate love admission to MacLachlan's character, and all he said in response was "You're a neat girl." That's so funny. Isabella Rosselini was also great in this, her character went through a lot of shit, a clearly damaged person, easy to feel sad for her. Brad Dourif and Jack Nance had some nice small roles in this. Tremendous soundtrack from frequent Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti. It was sad to learn that he passed away, it felt like that was what ended Lynch's daily weather report. I was hooked from start to finish, no boring moments, no waste of time, Blue Velvet's a beautiful fusion of disturbing content, striking visuals, weird, funny, intense, and beautiful dialogue.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Pretty fun buddy comedy with a decent amount of fan service, Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey, and a surprise MVP in the form of Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub).

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - A somewhat better balance of action and comedy, this movie had more action sequences than the first. It's better than Sonic 1 in nearly every way, but the wedding subplot really was like putting pebbles in the shoes of an NBA player. The movie doesn't reach the heights it could have,

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - A total triumph on so many levels. Easily the best movie in the trilogy. Filled to the brim with fanservice, the story is practically a live action adaptation of the Sonic Adventure 2 story. Solid performances from some cast members, Ben Schwartz especially delivered for Sonic's dramatic moments, not being a total goofball, Jim Carrey still in top form, even when playing 2 Robotniks. Keanu as Shadow was simply peak cinema, so awesome. Agent Stone was an MVP again, even getting me a bit emotional. The movie had other emotional high points. Sonic 1 and 2 certainly had heart. Sonic 3 was practically a bleeding heart, and I love that. Stronger action, better handling of comedy, the fat was trimmed, goofy side characters pushed far to the side, well worth the hype. Sonic 3 has now entered my top 5 of 2024. Yeah, this movie is in the same group as Love Lies Bleeding, A Different Man, The Substance, and Anora! I'll even go as far as to say that this is the best video game movie adaptation I've seen since the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie. There has been some good ones over the last few years, but Sonic 3 outpaces them. A very strong instance of Sonic beating Mario.

Twisters (2024)
I was actually surprised that it was so coherent and well made. I've read a few Michael Crichton books, so I'm aware of his style and level of research. I've seen (people claiming to be) meteorologists vouch for the validity of the technobabble, so the internet seems to agree that the writers did their homework. The plot was a bit predictable, but the characterizations and acting helped offset that.

I was pleased it wasn't a cheap cash-in. It felt closer to Ghostbusters Afterlife than not, if we're comparing modern reboots.

Overall it was a decent watch. If you like your Summer action blockbusters, you should give Twisters a try.

Emilia Perez - I ranted about this movie a bunch in other places. I'll keep it short and sweet here. Horrible representation of Mexicans and trans people. Pointless musical, bad singing and choreography, shallow storytelling, overrated as fuck by awards bodies, especially the Oscars. Last week, it was very clear that Jacques Audiard was the enemy responsible for this shit, which he earned for stupid comments like that Spanish is the language of the developing countries and poor people. For the last couple of days, Karla Sofia Gascon has been the enemy for being a hateful bitch. Both of them can fuck off.

Days of Heaven - Seriously a work of art. The cinematography is gorgeous with a lot of effort put into the visual style of the movie. It draws you into this period piece set in 1916 Texas. It's so alluring that it compensates for a very simple love triangle drama. The acting is decent, very young Richard Gere here. Narration from Linda Manz, who is the little girl in this movie, was useful, but its strongest quality is the visuals.

Groundhog Day - Longtime tradition to watch this every February 2. All-time classic comedy that never gets old.

Princess Mononoke - I had never watched a Ghibli movie before. This was a great movie. Amazing art style and animation, epic soundtrack, interesting and morally gray characters, and some pleasant surprises. I watched this in a Discord watch party and the host went with the dub. The dub was perfectly fine, but I was very sad to learn after watching the movie that the person who wrote the English script was Neil Gaiman. Miramax handled the dub too, so a bit of Harvey Weinstein attached to this. Sheesh. Anyway, I'll definitely watch more Studio Ghibli movies.

Boyz n the Hood. I randomly saw the last quarter of the movie on TV when I was a kid but for some reason, I didn't try and watch it completely until now. Up to this point, I had watched Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, which I knew spoofed this. I was surprised while watching this that the Wayans spoofed A LOT of this movie. Because I love that movie, I feared it would cloud my judgement of the original John Singleton film and that the impact of the movie would not truly hit me. Boy, it hit me big time. Fuck me. What the movie lacks in technical qualities and structure, it more than makes up for it in raw emotions, bursts of superb acting, and tear-jerking moments. Yeah, I loved this movie. I hate that it took me until 2025 to finally watch it, but better late than never.

I quite liked it and even moreso because I'm in a relationship with an older woman myself, we don't do most of the things shown in that movie as we're Catholics, but when we're married... It'll be a different story.

It's good to have movies about young guys with older women than young women with older guys (it's not really the same dynamic).

Nickel Boys - I hope I'll watch all the Best Picture nominees before the Oscars. So far I'm 4 for 10. Nickel Boys frankly got under-nominated by the Oscars. It should've gotten nominations for Best Director, Cinematography, Editing, Sound, and maybe Score. It is one of the most technically impressive movies of 2024. The story is engaging enough, 2 Black boys in an abusive reform school during the Jim Crow era, but the filmmaking techniques elevate and kind of overshadow the acting and narrative. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was the clear winner of the cast and should've gotten a Best Supporting Actress nomination. She's such a warm character that you want a hug from, ideal grandmother. The 2 young actors playing the leads were alright. It's not a 12 Years a Slave where the abuse shown is brutal, but it's decent for a PG-13 movie. The 1st person perspective way of filming worked out incredibly well, the editing helps keep that kind of shooting fresh, there are some intense sounds that help with the immersion, headphone users would be pleased. To me, it's the 2024 version of The Zone of Interest inasmuch that the technical aspects are amazing and the acting and narrative is lower on the totem pole. That said, the emotional range and accessibility is higher than The Zone of Interest, and the acting is generally more engaging. Of the 4 Best Picture nominees I've seen so far, Anora and The Substance are up front, Nickel Boys is not far behind, and in the absolute bottom is Emilia Perez, where it will likely stay.

Deadpool - Third time watching this, 2nd time watching it on Valentine's Day. Yeah it's a badass superhero movie with a great balance of comedy, meta stuff, and action. But it's also a love story, that's what makes Deadpool such a treat, it has very strong serious and romantic moments. I love unconventional things, and I look at Deadpool as an unconventional love story. Deadpool 2 has less of that emotional connection, but still great. I still have yet to see Deadpool and Wolverine, but I'm sure I'll enjoy that.

Come to Daddy (2019)

Elijah Wood genre shit (he's very good and productive in this area). Elijah Wood's character goes to see his estranged father after receiving a letter out of the blue, but all is not as it seems. Black comedy, more than a bit gross. Dialogue driven first half, violence in the back half. This is a rewatch, I enjoyed this one, but it's not quite a keeper for me.
