I think what he's getting at is that you don't really have to memorize the button placement or where your fingers are at all... Especially if you're someone who plays both XBox and Nintendo systems (me, probably you, and a bunch of other people), it gets confusing at times and (especially when playing XBox) I get my X and Y mixed up all the time.So is the SNES pad, and Xbox 360 controller.
For the Gamecube, it's nearly impossible to get mixed up... You have a large "main" button in the middle (A), you have a smaller secondary button towards the bottom (B), and two additional buttons (X and Y) of different shape and angle at the top and right of the "main" button. Plus, unlike the SNES/XBox layout, you don't have to worry about stretching to reach a button on the opposite side of the "cross" layout, because all the buttons are snugly fit around the A button.
Idk, that's just how it feels to me. I know it doesn't feel that way for everyone.
