I just got a fat PS3 (40GB) from a friend, but It wont read any games.

I looked into that and read the ps3 recovery menu could possibly fix this.

So my problem is, I have a firmware from before the recovery menu was implemented, But id like to stay below 3.21 for linux. Is there any way I can upgrade to a specific firmware without getting the newest one?

Also, a PS3 noob question: Would the newest firmware kill my backward compatibility?(If I even have it)

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Upgraded to 3.15 via USB.
Tried the recovery menu, Still wont read discs.

(some of the new firmwares for cfw or ofw with hen (formerly han) .......... will brick your ps3 if the dvd drive isn't working, which is a real shame because going past 4.82 han on OFW (official firmware), you need to have a working dvd drive, or you get bricked!

This is true if the logic board for the disc drive is dead. If a laser diode fails and it can’t read any games it will still update fine as the system still sees the drive.

OP can test this by putting a PS1 disc in the drive, since the drive has two laser diodes usually both are not fried so if the Blu-ray diode is bad but the logic board is fine the system will read the PS1 game.
