I just recently discovered that one of my friends has a XBOX 360, that he never plays. I'm going to offer $100's for it, but the catch is that it hasn't been connected to XBOX Live ever. It's also running Pre-NXE. So when I buy it from him, what are the tools that I'll need. I'm going to have to start from scratch, as I have no soldering tools. Oh, and if you can could you link me to a very noob friendly guide? Thanks.

https://docs.google.com/View?id=dnfmv5h_30dw33vpf4 is about as friendly as you will get. It is not a long/complex process but explaining it in detail is so read that and if you have questions on specifics speak up and someone will hopefully be able to elaborate on things.

Do not read it right away but if you have a yearning for the technical background (helps me when learning things) then http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php/Free60JtagHack is pretty good.

Tools wise assuming you have a parallel port (if you want USB you will be using proper electronics) then it will be resistors and maybe a few signals grade diodes and maybe a few transistors (very very basic stuff available from any components supply shop/website, probably even your neighbourhood radioshack)- what you need varies slightly between motherboard type and your chosen form of wiring (a few variations exist aimed at more stable hacks).
A soldering iron is necessary but nothing drastic- a good solderer could use a $10 firestarter type iron but if you are not as well versed then consider a marginally better one with variable heat and the like.

Make sure it is JTAG capable as well- games also carry updates so a go with a game wave 5 or beyond (not sure about 4) will mess it up.

Pre NXE isn't an issue, you can go from any version to FreeBoot. On the pro I had I went from 6717 to FreeBoot with no issues, but on the Arcade Falcon (also pre NXE) I decided to go to 7371 first. The reason for that was it had a reported bad block (which was blank, aswell as those surrounding it), but wasn't marked as being remapped. After googling and finding no solution, I decided to install the 7371 update to see if if would detect the bad block and remap it. It remapped the bad block, which allowed Xellous to remap the FreeBoot image accordingly.

Most games tend to have 7371 on. It would be nice if there was a database of which games had which updates on.

Meh...Forget it. He won't sell it, yet he doesn't know what he can do with it. I'll just buy a Pre-JTAG'd one, hopefully for $200-$220

Nope, that's as easy as its gonna get. And only older 360 that hasn't been updated on live, (or played new games? according to Fast?) can be jtagged.
