My Details:
Old 3DS XL
Version: 11.3.0-36U
I've been following the instructions at https://3ds.guide/ to the letter until https://3ds.guide/safectrtransfer-(homebrew-launcher) Section II step 3. This is where I'm stuck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'd say it's because of your SD-Card.
2GB is too little in general, but in this specific case i'd assume it just stops after checking the free space on your SD and seeing that you don't have enough space to store the (necessary) backup that is made during the process.

I'll have to buy a larger SD card. Thanks for the reply!

They're very cheap just buy from a store, online they're mostly fake and cause a corrupted sd and your data lost
Not if you buy from a respectable seller. And if is fake, you'll probably be able to get a refund (from said sellers).

I've purchased a number of real SD cards online. The last one was the one on my 3DS, a 64GB Samsung EVO I got for 20ish €.

I mean like unbranded ones from CN/HK for dirty cheap tend to be fake

I'd personally recommend 32GB/64GB
