Hacking ISP contacted me

My ISP contacted me by letter alerting us of a second offense for illegally downloading wii games! It says to contact them within 10 days or get the service shut off... I am like freaked out because I have never gotten one of these before. What is going to happen? Any suggestions to what I should do? No more downloading for me!

ok first of all, do not worry... this is no biggie, seriously!!!
i know you are glad to hear this so listen carefully...

first of all... ISPs never do anything about these letters... i got one before and they told me the same thing... and i did nothing about it and it blew over... no one cares...

but in your case since they are requesting a phone call i suggest you call them and tell them that you have no idea that anyone downloaded something illegal... they cannot prove it was necessarily you...

you can claim that you have a wireless router without a lock (WEP for example) because you are just not tech savy... what are they going to say to that... i know... nothing.... they have no proof...

really give them a call and you'll see that it was really nothing... and if you want to prevent these letters in the future download peerguardian2

google it... it blocks certain IP addresses when you are torrenting or downloading... once i started using peerguardian2 i never got a letter again.

hope that clears a few things for you and relieves your worries... they really do not have any proof on you... delete the file and play stupid... remember... you have no idea how it happened

Deny it and say that you have a wireless router. If they ask about security ask them what they are talking about. Make it seem like you have an open wifi signal and maybe someone else connected to it and was downloading. Tell them that you will shut off the wireless if that would help solve the problem ad more than likely they will let you off with a warning. Then stop fuckin pirating games. If your too poor to buy them, then rent them you cheap bastard, and if you say you can't afford to rent games, then borrow them. If you say you don't know anyone else with a Wii, then maybe you spend too much time at home and could use to stop pirating shit and make some friends in the outside world.

Peer Guardian 2 is the way to go. I used to get these letters every couple months. Now i get nothing.

Thanks my mom is going to say a minor (myself) did it. Hopefully they don't do anything. I am scared shitless.

1)Who was the claim originating from? Ubisoft/Nintendo/ESA/etc?

2)Did you really download them? (answer is probably yes but hey open wifi = out of your control)

Ive received emails like that before. For a few movies I got. They never said that they'd disconnect me, just asked me to stop downloading.. Funny thing is one of them was for Inconvient Truth. Right on the case when you buy it, it says to share with your friends ect.

I started using ipfilter.dat for uTorrent and I havent received any other emails since. Honestly they can't do anything to you. WORST case they would shut your internet off. But thats all. Move on to a different isp. But I doubt even that would happen..

Peer guardian and encryption aren't magic bullets, chances are they greatly reduce your risk but you are still open to being caught.

Do to think they will sue or anything? I am going back to buying games, this is kinda like a wakeup call for me.

They won't sue. Your ISP will give you a slap on the wrist and tell you not to do it again or to tighten your security if you blame it on someone hacking your wireless. At the end of the day its not worth the effort to sue individual users. They've already got what they wanted, they scared you into stopping.
