Is it possible to hack vwii without messing with the rest of the system? Would Nintendo be able to detect that I've hacked it if I play Wii U games online?

it's self contained. you don't have to exploit the wii u whatsoever to hack the vwii. you're safe playing online. Nintendo simply doesn't care about the wii u, since it was a failure.
