I have my niece's old 2ds, she gave it to me years ago to fix and I got sidetracked...

Anyhow. I'm wondering if anyone might point me in the right direction.

When I plug the thing in, the orange charging light comes on. But, it never charges. If I charge the battery in my 3ds, then swap it in the 2ds I can play the 2ds until the battery dies.

My guess is there is something wrong with the charging port? It's just odd that the charging light would come on, and the 2ds would think it was receiving a charge.

Should I replace the port? I'm just worried I might go to all this effort, and it still doesn't fix my issue. Thanks.

The charging port is most likely fine, since the voltage from the charger is somehow coming through onto the circuit board and into the electronics that are responsible for lighting up the charging indicator.

Does the charging light stay on the whole time that you have the charger plugged in? Does it not turn off a few seconds after connecting the charger? You can also check if the charging port is not loose/damaged, does the charging light not intermittently switch off and on if you wiggle the charger's connector around in the 2DS' charging port?

There's a chance that the issue is caused by a blown microfuse on the circuit board. (However, I remember that when a charging-related microfuse was blown on a DS or 3DS, the behavior was usually that the charging light would switch off a few seconds after connecting the charger, which is the exact same behavior as when there's no battery in the system.)

The fuse is a tiny component that looks like a surface-mount resistor but usually has a green stripe instead of a black one.
I couldn't find a schematic of fuse locations for the 2DS online right now, but you may be able to find one. The fuses should be placed mostly around the charging port and the battery terminals. You can check with a continuity tester / multimeter whether they are blown or not.

Replacing the tiny fuse shouldn't be terribly hard, but it requires a bit of precise soldering, so I wouldn't recommend it as a first soldering attempt.

If it's not a blown microfuse, the issue is most likely deeper within the charging circuit. It could be a charging IC, voltage regulator, or another smaller component such as a diode or capacitor. It would require more advanced diagnosis. However, it can't hurt to generally inspect the board with your own eyes (maybe with a magnifying glass) and see if any component is visibly blown, burned, detached from the solder joints, or visibly damaged in another way.

This problem seems quite common: the charging LED is on, the menu shows the charging icon, but the battery won't charge—the charging current is 0. The battery is fine; if you take it out, it can be fully charged with an external charger, and the console can play games normally.

If the motherboard hasn't been water-damaged or dropped, it could be a faulty charging chip.
As for repairs, I don't know the prices abroad, but in China, the cost of a single repair is about the same as buying a brand-new 2DS motherboard($15).
