Would it be possible in theory to rename an mp3 to a text file and then post the text to facebook or something, allowing people to download by copy and pasting?

Ive tried this but the text file wouldn't open so my real question is if there is a way to convert it to text?

Well, for one thing there would be no text to display...

You're better off uploading it to Youtube with some generic video and posting the Youtube link on Facebook. Things like JDownloader can rip MP3's directly from Youtube videos without downloading the video, so just post a link to that too. I would say a file storage site like Megaupload or Mediafire, but posting that to your Facebook seems like an easy way to get pinned with copyright infringement.

My point isnt to distribute music, but rather if it can be done by copy + pasting text.

Thanks, looks like a hex editor is the only option.

What you have just described is more or less exactly how usenet works at the base level.

You have three options in that case
base64 (a slight twist on this is how email attachments are sent- MIME)
    uuencode
    yenc

All can be encoded and decoded with something like http://www.miken.com/uud/

or any text editor with binary support (such as edit.com which comes with every version of windows/dos since forever).

The question is, why bother when there are much easier services around.

MP3 files can be renamed to text, this is an example of a chunk out of one:
