Maybe I'm going crazy but is the top part of the top screen's shell suppose to be raised up as much as it is like this? almost like it's slanted upwards. Is this normal?

It's kinda hard to see from the front view but the left rubber pad that's on the top screen isn't touching the bottom part of the 3DS. Only the right one is.

The left side of the hinge is hollow. The part that holds the lid in place is only on the right. So there's nothing actually holding the left side down and a little bit of plastic flex from wear and tear can lead to it not closing firmly anymore. I would say it's not a cause for concern. Though, watch out for any micro cracks on the left side of the hinge, as long as it looks fine you're good.

Sorry if I'm not understanding correctly. I'm not sure if you meant specifically my 3DS or you mean that they're all designed in the way you just described?

The left side of the hinge is where the ribbon cables go so that's why it's hollow. Not just the 3DS, but also the DS line is designed like this. And the DS Lite was notorious for the hinge snapping, which starts as a thin hairline crack so that's why I'm saying to watch out for micro cracks, although it doesn't seem to be that common on the 3DS.
