I just recently started to use my iPod 2g (mc) 8bg again and i plugged it into the mains charger, when i remove it from the charger it turns off and wont turn on again until i plug it into the mains again (it wont turn on if its plugged into the computer either) what is wrong with it and is it and is it fixable?

I have no experience with the iPod you are talking about, but my iPod Shuffle (when loaded into iTunes) has an option to reset to factory settings when problems occur. If your iPod has this function, you might want to give it a try.
I'm not sure if this would delete files, so if you can access the files, make a back-up.

It is completely fixable i have done it to a friends ipod touch 2g (mc), just like your one.
1st. buy this battery: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Original-New-Battery-iPod-Touch-2G-2nd-Gen-Tools-/270729364924?pt=AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item3f08ba45bc
2nd. Follow this guide: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iPod-Touch-2nd-Generation-Battery-Replacement/1131/1
3rd. Update, Jailbreak and Enjoy! ^_^
