Ok...never heard that particular expression before. And, since a lot of my interests tend to mirror more what guys are traditionally into, rather than girls...this wouldn't be the first time some have speculated that about me. But it's the first time I have heard that expression.

Yup. Mostly this is the case. I have a touch of the Luddite about me...wanting to go only so far, and then no farther.

Imagine, if you will, when - in the third Star Trek movie, Scotty commented about the Excelsior -

Sulu: It has transwarp drive.

I'm sorta like Scotty in my attitudes about that sort of thing.

But there it is again...not too many female Trekkies out there, rither...more Trekkies are guys rather than girls, but there it is again. Also I'm into Star Wars. Now, there ARE more female Star wars fans than female Trekkies. But both groups have more males than females, definitely.

So I am not offended by the suggestion I am a "trap." Just hadn't heard it put that way before. And I find the expression sort of amusing, actually.

This is the stuff I grew up with. I'm getting nostalgic in my older years...looks like maybe I am hitting my "second childhood" LOL

I'm only 16 and absolutely LOVE old video games. I want to amass a collection of consoles like the AVGN though not as mad on the games. My SNES was the first ever console I played and I played it when I was 3 years old (so 1996) I have such memories of crashing into the walls in Mario Kart.

You're a bit younger than me, but to be honest, I like the games of your generation too.
Cuz, Pong sucks on anything. Pong always sucked, well it was awesome for the first day or two when it came out in '76 or whenever.

The new Space Invaders Extreme games on DS are freaking fun tho, I never thought they'd actually make Space Invaders fun, but I'm glad they tried and met with GREAT SUCCESS!

What?!? How dare you? Just about everything Activision ever released for the Atari 2600 was pure gold. Pitfall 1 & 2, River Raid, HERO, etc.

Most the arcade translations were just as much fun as the real thing, just not as pretty.

And everything Mistique ever released deserves a freakin' award.

Or probably not.

The 2600 had it's fair share of crap, as does the DS/Wii. But if you haven't played some of it's classics you're missing out.

Now, I think I'll go take my Geritol and play me some Mountain King... Right after my nap.

I have finally decided I am going to actually do a real blog on that subject too, not just on GBATemp...but out there, probably on WordPress....talking all about the movies, the music, the fashions, the idols, the games, the icons....everything 80's. Back when we all had big hair (guys and girls alike) and girls just wanted to have fun. The decade that gave birth to the moonwalk, and the headbang. The decade defined by Ferris Beuller, Ghostbusters, and Wargames...when terrorism was something that only happened "somewhere else" and all we ever had to worry about was a Russian ICBM overhead....a time of Clara Peller asking where the beef was, and a time of Max Headroom. If I could, I'd build a time machine and go right back to that era...and speaking of time machines....we had the flux capacitor!!

Not that I didn't own my share of technology in the 80's mind. The 2600, TI-994A, Coleco Vision, C= VIC20, C= 64... I still have 2 Amigas (an 030'ed 2000 and a 060/PPC'ed 4000) sitting on my desk, they're on my network and I still use them from time to time.

Retro gaming probably accounts for about 1/4 of my gaming time... Not that I'm stuck in the past mind. My PC is fairly high spec, I have consoles from this generation, etc.

I've never used it, though. I do most my "on the go" emulation on my PSP's... Except for Neo Geo stuff, the DS's pad just feels better for fighting games.

I know. But, even though I'm born in 1971...I don't identify, really, with Gen-X. to me...Gen-X is YOUNGER than me, only. And I would define it more as those born from about 1979 to 1999.

Their interests don't match mine....their attitudes don't...nothing does.

I feel as though I am somewhat without a real generation to call my own...born in the gray area between to major generations.

I have sometimes referred to it as the "Me Generation" and I've heard that phrase used before...describing people born within 10 years after the end of the Baby Boomers....with whom I also do not identify.

and today's youngsters, I know...are already being called Generation Y. At the risk of insulting and alienating some people here....I call them "Generation WHY???????" LOL!!!

I mean, there is TOTALLY nothing I can relate to...with the Gen-Y folks....nothing. It's as if they come from a whole different planet than I do. There isn't much I relate with Gen-X, either, but at least I can recognize 'em as having come from the same planet!!

Who is part of Generation Me?


Generation Me describes anyone born in the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s -- in 2006, this means people between the ages of 7 and 36. These are today's young people, those who take it for granted that the self comes first. I'm a member of this generation myself, born in 1971.


How is Generation Me different from previous generations, especially from the "Me generation" of the 1970s?


Baby Boomers were sometimes called the "Me generation" in the 1970s, but this was a premature and brief label: Boomers did not discover the self until young adulthood, and even then did everything in groups, from protests to seminars like est. Generation Me has never known a world that put duty before self, and believes that the needs of the individual should come first. This is not the same thing as being selfish – it is captured, instead, in the phrases we so often hear: "Be yourself," "Believe in yourself," "You must love yourself before you can love someone else." These are some of our culture's most deeply entrenched beliefs, and Generation Me has grown up hearing them whispered in our ears like the subliminally conditioned children in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.


THAT is more what I identify with...To me, Gen-X is the people who came after me. Gen-X are the slackers, the lazy, the people who have no real work ethic...who had everything just handed and given to them from when they were kids....they never had to go out and WORK for it, like I did, and folks my age did.

I remember delivering newspapers, as an 8 year old....dragging the papers behind me on a sled in the winter, sometimes going thru snowdrifts up to my chest to get the job done. All for my own spending money.

I can't imagine a true Gen-X'er doing that. To say nothing about a Gen Y'er doing it.

We....of what I call the Me Generation...and I define that as 1965-1979....we were self-absorbed, yes...but we were not selfish...we had a strong sense of self, we knew who we were, and we knew what we wanted...and what we wanted to be.

The second wave, as I then split it...comes after 1979...those, I feel....WERE truly selfish. And it has reached epic proportions in Gen-Y.

Now, of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but this is just my general observations and impressions.

I may fall into the defined demographic of Gen-X...but I just don't identify that way.

I identify as The Me Generation....and I don't define "Me Generation" as broadly as some others do.

I see the "Me Generation" as encompassing those who fall into the gray area between the Baby Boomers and what you could truly call Gen-X.

Yup, I'm a 13'er. And I've long felt we were screwed by the Baby Boomers...we are the first generation who will most likely NOT do better than our parents did...because our parents screwed us and sucked up all the goodies.

Sorry, Boomers, truth sometimes hurts.

And, yeah, this is the age group I relate to (1961-1981) I fall right in between, having been born in 1971.

I've always viewed the Gen X-ers as those born AFTER 1981. I don't include myself in Gen X.

In fact, I probably am of the belief about Gen X that most of the Boomers believe about MY generation...

Like I said...to my own mind, anyway...there is a generation BETWEEN the Boomers and Gen X...and that is the generation I am a part of.

Anyway, I don't relate much to the youth of today...those born after 1981. Which probably means 85 percent of this forum, LOL.

For one thing, these young kids today got smart mouths, and don't know to respect their elders and betters. A kid would have had their teeth smashed in...when I was a kid...if we talked to OUR elders the way these young kids talk to THEIR elders and betters.

I find that my most major piss-off with the young generation is exactly that. The fact that I had to suck up and respect my elders...even when I didn't want to...and had to swallow my words and shut up when I really wanted to speak my mind. and now, when itis MY turn to be respected in the same manner I once had to respect MY elders...I get smart-mouth kids who don't shut up, don't respect their betters...and whom I cannot just smash them in the teeth like I'd so badly like to.

The piss-off is that they get away with what we of my generation WISHED we could get away with.
