Is Entitlement harming the scene?

Hackers and developers are being pestered on social media with questions and demands for new hacks, new homebrews, easier piracy.

Impatient and often angry users seem to expect everything and yet contribute nothing.

Could this entitlement be harming the console homebrew-scene?

Always been a thing I would assume, just the means to deliver the criticism and quickness of travel has greatly increased making it more of an issue I would think. It's not like their waiting around for mail and get a couple letters after a week or two of hate, even on forums it probably wouldn't spread like wildfire like it does now.

A lot of devs that I talk to tend to try to zone out the prying and occasionally vent to me about it. It's kind of why a lot of them limit their time on social media. What really seems to hurt the scene more is often unchecked anti-LGBT+ attacks that they've gotten from the community or anti-LGBT+ comments that are all too common.

it does make me mad, because I've been attacked in the past for attacking wannabe devs. I guess a lot of these entitled brats are experts on how things work, yet still believe these people. they're not hackers or devs. they're full of shit, and they should be chased out of the scenes.

Hard to say. I would think the devs are only doing it for the challenge. The thrill of opening what has supposedly sealed off. And perhaps to play some free games(though from my one encounter with an actual dev, he didn't care so much for that).

But i don't see how entitled brats even enter the picture. They're already shielding themselves from the companies... Why should they care what others think? It's not a paid job, so it's not like they owe anyone anything.

(also... If true... Wouldn't that mean that all Nintendo has to do is hire some thugs to act ingrateful? Would be much easier than scare tactics)

@Taleweaver Funny. That thought occured to me as well.
Hire a botfarm and have them incessantly pester devs.
Eventually some will just quit and leave their hobby behind because its not fun anymore.

That would be one hell of a tatic.

What broke the Apple jailbreak scene was Apple adding all the things most people wanted into vanilla iOS. The demand for game emulators was too niche to keep jailbreaking mainstream, sadly.

So, erm...speaking in name of the collective hive mind audience here...what did we do to earn the hard work of developers?


It's certainly not respect & gratitude (see OP). It's not money (the moment someone charges for an emulator is the moment someone decides to clone it and distribute it for free). It's not sexual gratification (that I know of).

So what else is there? I mentioned the intellectual challenge, but that's hardly anything we bestow on developers (it's not that hard to be smarter than a group of programming-illiterate twitter trolls)
