Hacking Is Atmosphere expected to run signed code?

I have no doubt that within a few days of Atmospheres release, we will have the ability to load our own personal backups. It always seems to be the first thing accomplished for a new CFW, even if it's not by the original devs.

No - I'm just asking for clarification. I feel like there are a LOT of people here who are expecting something that isn't what the developers are intending to give them.

I guess it really depends on how homebrew for the Switch will be distributed.

If they do it like the 3DS's method (which was just using the same CIA format Nintendo uses internally), then Atmosphere will probably directly allow for installing unsigned software.

If they don't do it like that, it's anyones guess.

(Also, for the record, unless Nintendo changed shit, any 'backups' you might want to install are effectively unsigned; they are signed but they arent signed to your device. Running unsigned code means disabling the signature checks to see if a signature is signed to your device. This is why 3DS CFW also indirectly enables 'backups', they have to patch out the signature checks on CIA files/the home menu to get the homebrew applications to work).

None of the CFW devs are pro-piracy, so they're certainly not going to make an effort to enable piracy. However, they don't seem like they are going to try to actively prevent it either. It'll most likely take someone else to actually figure out how to get backups working on it, and then pass on that information to the public.
Team Xecuter...

I'm yet to see any CFW in existence not support a back up loader. I'm more interested in getting other types of homebrew on the go like media streaming etc. I already have all the good games, speaking of which does anybody know what is happening with metroid 4??

Depends on the Scene you are talking about.

Signed code its pretty much a retail game, an eshop game, everything that its "LEGAL" its signed code or signed content.

As for Unsigned Code, its BackUps loader, Homebrew, among piracy and others.

As for Atmosphere, its said that its a Custom Firmware, that would support EmuNand, so pretty much like Mocha on the WiiU, or the First RxTools on the 3ds, hopefully, later will just need a Signature Patcher, like Haxchi or Luma3DS, this ones just patches the required files in order to run unsigned code on the SysNand.

So, Most, if not 99.999999% of the Custom Firmwares are pointed to run Unsigned Code.

I feel like a remember a CFW for a system at one point where the devs were forcing people to submit apps to be signed with their own key.....idk if I'm mis-rembering....but I feel like it happed...or at least it was the plan but someone beat them to the punch and released a cfw with no signing stuff in it

If you could just load a second key/certificate into the trusted store, then you could probaby re-sign any apps that are commercially signed with your new key. Then they would run normally w/o needing any patched kernel/OS. But that's not a very good solution as it would be easily defeated by Nintendo.

yeah idk if it was just a discussion people were having at one point or if devs were actually planning to go down that route to allow homebrew but stop backups, the intent was to keep the key as a private key and only sign submitted apps so only submitted homebrew would work

Running homebrews and running true Switch titles are not the same thing. Remember the time it took to have Rosalina and HBL integration to the 3DS home menu ?

I think it's pretty widely known that Atmosphere does not come with backup loading. Although I can understand being out of the loop. That being said, you probably could have found the answer by searching "atmosphere backup loading" or similar.

EDIT: Yes, using the above suggested search terms reveals the answer in the search results.

Atmosphere obv won't have a way to run pirated games on release date, I think you get banned from Reswitched Discord for even mentioning the P word. But, they aren't going out of their way to block it. So, someone else will have to code a backup loader.

This is actually a really good question and I can see how at first glance it’s not apparent.

Will add to FAQ as a section about things Atmosphere can/should be able to do

Thanks - that's why I asked and I feel like there was a LOT of misunderstanding and misconceiving going on.
