I'm curious if Atmosphere is intended only to add the function of home brew/alternate OS, or if it will allow you to run signed, Nintendo software as well from alternate locations. Because I don't recall seeing this mentioned anywhere.

The more I read, this is starting to look like a shim to allow home brew, and not a full-on hack of the switch OS a'la haxchi on the wiiu or the team xecuter firmwares on the old xbox.

Apologies if this has been answered - I just didn't see an answer and didn't feel like reading 59 pages of the Atmosphere thread.

CFWs can, in general, run signed software.

Are we really at the point were we need to screen threads before they are even posted? Do we really need someone reading our posts before hand just because we can't do our own part before posting? Sorry OP, and no disrespect intended, but this was stupid.

Probably they do not let automatically load the backups, but obviously they have the access and the permissions to do it, probably you need the keys in a folder and some other file at the beginning and later a fork from Atmosphere will come out. For Homebrew they will obviously work.

Backups are indeed unsigned, my bad. Then what do you refer to as "signed, Nintendo software as well from alternate locations" ? Like... homebrews ?

None of the CFW devs are pro-piracy, so they're certainly not going to make an effort to enable piracy. However, they don't seem like they are going to try to actively prevent it either. It'll most likely take someone else to actually figure out how to get backups working on it, and then pass on that information to the public.

Sorry I had to step away hence so many replies before I could answer -

1. Backups are signed, unless you strip away the signing. That's why backups won't run on non-hacked systems if you modify them.
2. CFW doesn't explicitly mean running signed code. It does explicitly mean running UNsigned code, yes.
3. Yes I am specifically asking about piracy.

So some of you may think this is a stupid thread, but no one has answered this after several responses. (Well The Real Jdbye mostly did)

I noticed that a lot when this started, I get that there's threads for this kind of thing but people aren't going to want to go through 1400 pages just to get an answer mostly because they'd have to sift through every so for post to find their answer

Well Atmosphère on its own will likely not allow running signed backups. But one may make an homebrew to do so, like the USB Loader or the Wii.

edit : so backups are signed, thank you

The salt is strong with this one...

However, an all-piracy-or-nothing CFW would give me a good laugh if someone actually made this.

Features included:
- backup loading
- emulators
- blocker for signed apps and physical game cards (including the dumping process of such, so that you REALLY have to get them from someone else)
- warning messages about how purchasing games can affect your purse
