Ok, I've been given an iPhone 4. It has a cracked LCD so half the screen doesn't show. Also no matter what SIM card is put in, it shows No service. What she wants (and I'm trying to do) is to get it working again as a normal phone.

Screen - the touchscreen works and the software works, but from the top right corner to the bottom left corner and below, I can't see anything. It only needs a replacement LCD.

Software - from what I've been able to see, it looks like its on firmware 5.1.1.0.

Carrier - its currently got a 3 SIM in it. I don't know what it was on originally, but we tried a local phone unlocking shop and they say it won't work no matter what network SIM they put in it. It either says No SIM or No Service. Currently showing No Service. I've tried a manual search for carriers and 4 show up, so I know the antenna works, but trying to connect just says something about a restricted network, and I can't see most of the message. Ideally she wants to put it on GiffGaff (don't ask), but she doesn't mind if she is stuck with 3.

I've got it for 3 days to try and fix it. When I get home I'll try iTunes to see if restoring or jail breaking works. I've also considered sending it off to Apple to see if I can get them to replace it for me, but I know that'll cost £120. We just want to see what we can do to fix it with what we have.

So... Any suggestions/ideas/advice?

Try restoring first. If still fails, send to Apple.

Personally I would send it to Apple/buy a new phone immediately if I found out a cracked screen.

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Hope you've had a good morning.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

I think that's why I focus on just enjoying single player experiences that aren't too competitive
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
    How are you doing?
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
There's also this thing where I'm hyperfocused at night and cannot get to sleep.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Maximumbeans, I'm doing alright, thanks.

That must be rough. Productive I'm sure but hard to balance with daily life

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.

@Maximumbeans, I had a friend who had a glass chess set for their birthday.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It was like all clear and fancy. Tbf I'm not too experienced with chess, but would like to learn someday.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
    That sounds really cool
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
I know the basics but no strategy at all

Watch chess streamers on Twitch and you'll pick up a thing or two.
