it should say like, whole harddrive, resize disk, etc...

at the bottom it should say manual. click it, it'll reload and show you your harddrives, find your 30GB one and delete all partitions on it, then, make a partition equal to the amount of RAM you have and under the partition types, select SWAP. than, with the reaminder space, make that all ext3 mounted at "/" and I think you flag as bootable if there is the option.

PS: the swap size is up to you but it is basically backup RAM.

i don't understand the bold part. The 30GB is a partition on my hard drive.

are you using the live CD or that other special version?

I made the partition with Vista's tool (right click computer -> Manage -> Disc Management.

But how would it make it's own partitions?

I get the option when it comes to installing it - Manual or Use my whole Hard drive.

I was Vista and Ubuntu so i can't use my whole hard drive so i go for manual which is the only option left.

Once you've got the empty space you do the manual partitioning.

Create a 2gb swap space and then partition the rest as your root /

You do need swap. That's like saying you don't need a page file.

Try that.

Set your swap to bigger than 512mb though. I generally match my swap space to my RAM size.

select manual, delete (if any) partitions on the harddrive. make a (TOTAL RAM AMOUNT/the amount is optional, i just recommend it to match ram) partition and use the SWAP filesystem. then with the remainder, make a EXT3 partition mounted at "/" and continue on with the installation

Do it all in Ubuntu. You can't create the right partitions in Vista for a Linux install.

I had fun installing Ubuntu on a Toshiba M200 tablet PC the other day. No floppy, no CD, can't boot off external CD.

Ended up setting up a PXE boot server and installing it over the network. Worked well.

Somehow i fucked up and Vista wouldn't start. I had to do a startup recovery via the recovery partition which came with my pc.

I'm staying away from linux from now on.

Dual booting sucks anyway. You'll end up spending all your time in one OS or the other while the other one sits unused.

Install VMWare Server in Vista and run Ubuntu in that if you want to play with it.

Or find a cheap second PC/Laptop to run it on.

I have tried that before, i only did it to see what the fuss was with linux.

I would like to dual boot linux and vista and I'd use them both equally but if i'll end up destroying vista on my pc and it will be alot of hassle.

Oh well, i guess I'll stick with good old vista.

VMWare emulates a PC so you can install anything on it. It works well, I run it on my Linux server at home to run XP so I can run uTorrent.

It's also completely free, which is a nice bonus.
