i bought a PS4 with no HDD. i put one in and got this message.

connect a USB storage device that contains an update file for re-installation for version 6.0 or later.

i'm assuming that means it has firmware 6.0 installed?

i've read some threads on how to get this console up an running. some say i have to install something with a USB. others say go to safe mode and choose option 6 or 7.

which is it?

Yes it means it’s a 6.00 consoles :(

Just put in the hdd, insert a exfat formatted USB stick with the 6.0 update on in the folder structure:

PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP

Then start up and it should auto guide you through.

If not hold power on boot, go to recovery, select option 7.

Either way you need to download the 6.00 update and use a usb stick to install it to the hdd. You cannot install anything lower.

Be sure to put the full firmware not just the update, the archive size must be 1gb+
