I got the 3.55 Custom Firmware I want to test it out but do I need a dongle to put the .self files into my "Install Package Files" folder or can I use a usb flash drive to do this?
sorry but im kinda new to the ps3 jailbreak scene

If youre new don't touch it you can brick your machine. Just wait for a tutorial to be made when it is safe enough.

Install Package Files will only install package files (i.e. .PKG files), not .SELF files (which are just executables). There are no signed .PKGs yet because no one has (publicly) reverse engineered the NPDRM (which would allow piracy of all PSN content if it were reverse engineered AFAIK), which is necessary for a .PKG to be valid. However, geohot has patched the NPDRM check out of the firmware, but has not yet released this. He says he may release it as a .PUP custom update.

lol to late I put the custom firmware on my ps3 now everything works fine
so will emulators and homebrew be in .pkg format when they are signed?

don't expect too much signed homebrew, won't be long untill we can enable running unsigned homebrew on any ps3.
