I'm not incredibly literate when it comes to 3DS homebrew stuff, so forgive me if I sound like a total fool throughout this post. I have two 3DS, both old (not a "New 3DS," I mean), one original, one XL. The original is running firmware 9.0.0U and is Gateway enabled. The XL is running 10.3.0U with Menuhax enabled.
I stumbled upon a post that linked to a Smash 3DS save file that you could inject to get certain legal custom equipment which could then be transferred to WiiU Smash. This is the link to the custom save:

Inside that download (among all the apps you need and files to run them) are two save file parts: account_data.bin and system_data.bin. Following the instructions included, I managed to back up my Smash 3DS save file using Save Manager, but the the app continuously crashed upon trying to inject the save data from the download several different times. I realized it was because my Smash 3DS (digital version, not cart) is still running 1.1.4 and doesn't have all the DLC installed. So I think I'm screwed there, because I can't update the game or download the DLC without updating, which would make Menuhax impossible to install (right?). It would also completely remove all possibility of using other homebrew on the 3DS XL, which I've kinda been holding out for (I haven't dug too deeply yet, though). I also think I can't update the game via .cia files because rxTools and other such programs don't work on 10.3.0U (unless I'm very mistaken...which is possible...)
So I thought, maybe I can do this through Gateway and a rom on the original 3DS. I got a Smash .3ds rom file and patched it to 1.1.5 with all DLC via .cia files and Big Blue Menu. I can't go any further now because the server to launch Browserhax is down, but I'm starting to become suspicious that Gateway saves won't be treated the same as regular retail digital or cartridge saves by the Save Manager program (after some research and failed attempts to understand how the 3DS manages save files versus how Gateway does it). So my questions are these:
1) Can you take those .bin files from the Smash save download I linked and inject them into the save data for a .3ds rom, via Save Manager or some other program? Would something like that even work? (If and when Browserhax server is live again to install Menuhax on my original 3DS).
2) Is there any way in the world to update retail Smash 3DS without updating the console while being on 10.3.0U? From what I've read, I think it's not. I also believe downgrading is an option, but I'm not sure if other options are available and I've heard over and over again how dangerous that process can be.
Please, someone smarter than me, I'd really love some help here. I've been banging my head against a wall for the last 24 hours trying to do this and I just can't make it happen. Due to my limitations, it might actually be impossible right now, but even if that's true, just knowing that will be something to set my mind at ease. Sorry for how long-winded this post was and thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer me!
