Gaming i'm feeling to cry

First thing in the morning i get up to put on my pc and guess what? When i hit the power i heard this mechanical sound coming from the tower followed by 3-5 beeps. Nothing was displayed on the monitor. I restarted it a couple times and the same thing happen every time.Then i opened it up to make sure everything was good inside, no loose wires/parts. Powered it up again and same thing happens.I'm starting to think my hard-drive is fucked, that's the only thing that comes to mind. There goes my 500gig that i bought about 1 year now with over 400gig of awesome on it. I feel as though i lost part of myself. Who say's get wasted and pass out?

Either way you should take your hard drive out and try smacking it on the back a few times, this can sometimes put the mechanism back into place and make it work again, i had the same beeping sound with my laptop drive and thats what i was told to do, after the third try it actually worked!

Bring the computer to a repair place, it will cost about $85-300, but it's worth it!

Either way you should take your hard drive out and try smacking it on the back a few times, this can sometimes put the mechanism back into place and make it work again, i had the same beeping sound with my laptop drive and thats what i was told to do, after the third try it actually worked!

Okay, that's the worst fucking idea I've heard in my life.

There are ways to back things up from a faulty drive, but I don't know them off the top of my head. Try Google and you'll more than likely find a better plan than beating up your HDD.

Evin if your hard drive was fucked you'd still see something on the monitor from the BIOS - repost with the correct number of beeps, and yes that is important (also short or long).

Hi, computer person here. A dead hard drive would note cause the symptoms you describe. Specifically, you would still see the Power On Self Test (POST) and then it would give you a message saying, "Boot device not found," or something to that effect. If you tell us what kind of beeps you are getting (short or long, and the pattern) then we can give you some more advice. Additionally, what do you mean when you say that you hear a "mechanical sound"?

EDIT: Didn't see poster directly above me. He has the right idea. Please note that even if the HD is failing there are several ways you can attempt to recover data.

It's mostly likely a connection problem somewhere in the system. If it WAS running fine, then all of a sudden this started happening, try re-seating (unplug and plug back in) all cards and power harnesses. Barring any hardware failures, that should fix it. It's what I have to do on this 5 year old PC I'm running every once in a while.

Be sure to unplug power from the power supply first though. Don't want to short anything out.

I've had a hard drive issue once so I took it out and gave it some tapping on the side with a screw driver, seemed to do the trick. Worth a shot.

Take out your RAM and put it back in. if you have >1 ram chips, switch them around. Even with a failed harddrive, most computers have the bios outside the harddrive, it should still load up.

You can always try taking out the harddrive and using a harddrive enclosure kit to try loading the harddrive on a working computer to see if it hangs or not.

if it's 2 to 3 beeps it most likely is bad ram. This also depends on the manufacturer of your motherboard. Your best bet would be to get the manual of your mobo, then look for a list of beep troubleshooting. the number of beeps represent a code and the chart should tell you what is wrong with it.

this is definitely not the hard drive. even with a bad hard drive like previous people said, the computer would still post.

There's like 9-12 of the mechanical sound (i tried to source the sound but it's really hard to tell what exactly is making it) after the mechanical sounds there's like 4 beeps. The first beep is longer the the following beeps. Like this beeeep..beep.beep.beep. Pretty fast as well. If i head correct that's the correct amount of beep. The mechanical sound is what is really throwing me off, don't know what's making it. Also, the lights on my key board seems to blink continuously. I tried unplugging and re-plugging but the problem persists. That's pretty much all i can give. If this could be fixed it would mean a lot. thank you

If you have several sticks of ram, try booting with just 1 stick - also try in different slots etc Could be many things, the blinking lights make me wonder if it's not a PSU issue. Worth clearing CMOS too.

A light tap can work if it's the moving mechanism within the drive failing or sticking, but it'd be better (theoretically) to open it up and solve the problem instead of blindly tapping on it. I had that problem, a hard drive that would stop loading sporadically because the eye would get stuck, and a gentle nudge in the right spot of my laptop case would get it moving. Of course, it wasn't a good sign, and shit stopped working entirely about a month later. From there I froze it for a few hours, and it worked long enough to grab a few things I hadn't backed up.

But since it sounds like the hard drive isn't the issue, the point is kind of moot, haha.

Ok guys thanks for the help but i seem to have this thing figured out. The mechanical sound was 1 of my cd drive's (my good drive at that, fuck) and it seems that my graphics card seem to be the problem. Not really the graphics card but the slot it was in, i simply switched the slot it was in. Now i'm all happy an cuddly.

Fan bearing most likely. Also a HDD may not be mounted well and is causing case vibration.

Yeah, my fan is janky as hell, but I'm too cheap to replace it, so I just have a small fan pointed at the vent 24/7 so the internal fan has no reason to power up. It's obscenely loud and doesn't cool at all, which seems like just what I need in a fan.

Computer fans are not even $10 for a generic one. You probably could pay for one in electricity savings from not having to run a giant fan on your computer.
