Now I have my issues with copy and paste coding (both the general library smashing coding and actual copy and paste fragments type coders) but I would hold that having people able to code a game in a similar manner to how someone might make a board game with just an understanding of how things work, use a word processor/desktop publishing to knock out a novel or use image editing software to play proper photographer is a highly desirable goal.
Now there are some interesting ideas ( http://cs.harvard.edu/malan/scratch/printer.php being one of the most prominent) but they are not quite there yet and I think I had better stop before I go too off topic.

Yeah if you have to make a game in <3 days (the usual for competitions being streamed, otherwise it's like a week I think), re-writing functions is wasted time.
