This did help.
It went from not seeing the save at all to seeing it, but deleting it as corrupt... a big improvement! Thanks!!!

Use the CONTRAST-US release of OoT
Use these files (they may differ after so many changes)

If you get the error - "save data corrupted" try writing the rom in a different slot on Sky3DS.

Did try this with no luck but I'm going to try a different rom altogether.

I think it is, actually. The name of the save file looks something like this on the select screen: GATEWAY**********J***********G*********** and you start up in your house and press A to display the records in game, which presumably shows your name. So it looks like a name based overflow (although this time it's not Epona's name)
OoT is full of bugs as they deliberately kept most of the original bugs when they ported it and didn't go out of their way to fix bugs unless it affected playability of the game. So that probably made it easy for GW to find a bug in this game, maybe they chose it for that reason. Plus it's using older save encryption which is what allows the saves to work on any cart without conversion, making it convenient for people to install the exploit as long as they have a save dongle or a hacked console.

No I would keep your gateway for now and just see what happens

You need sky to enter gateway mode, so selling gateway would be pointless.
