The only way to get an update on an older fw is to get a decrypted cia of the update and use it hans, or have emunand. https://gbatemp.net/threads/poc-tutorial-hans-use-how-to-combine-updates-with-your-game.402008/ I think this thread mentioned sm4sh updates and how to decrypt them on page 2 or 3

Uck! We have to use 3DS version less than or equal to 9.2. I can't even trick the Smash cart with Hans on what version it is. I think I'm going to make a new thread on how to get to eshop when it's currently not working on hans

Actually Nevermind, i got eshop access working on my other 3DS

Hans doesn't work with smash 4 yet, it uses to much ram.

Where do you think the update data comes from? The eShop! Where else would the game get the data from?

The game loads a little mini-eshop that connects and downloads the update.
But you need to have the system update to connect.
