I have a Wii with error 003. The only solderless modchip I could find was the "Amazekey" from chipeinbau:

https://www.chipeinbau.de/produkt/amazekey-modchip/

The backups I burn won't start. I have no idea if it's the discs (and how I'm burning them: Verbatim DVD-R at 4x) or if the modchip just isn't working.

Any way I can tell if it's the modchip or the dvds that is letting me down?

Thanks!

Of course it would be easier to test with a working Wii Menu...

If you don't have another Wii around you can't do better than simple elimination work (= are you sure you don't have a D3v2, D4, D4S drive; are your backups 100% clean outside of making them autobooting, as if you have a 003 brick you probably don't have trucha in the Wii Menu IOS; ...)

If you can find a cheap Raspberry Pi 0W you can try BlueBomb instead!

I actually do have two other Wii consoles: 1 totally unmodded with a D2E and another I've softmodded but it has a D3 drive.

I took the Amazekey modchip from the 003 wii and put it in the unmodded Wii and the drive could read a commercial disc/game (Trauma Team).

On a soft modded Wii, can they boot if you use something like Gecko OS or maybe USB loader GX?

HAve you tried dumping a known working pressed disc using clean rip and burning that?

I put the DMS drive in the softmodded Wii and Mario Kart-PWNS backup worked in USB Loader GX. So did the NTSC Wii game.

The GameCube backup worked on the Wii with the modchip. But the NTSC Wii game didn't. Perhaps for the same reason backup Wii games won't as master801 says above?

So since the gamecube backup works = the modchip is working. So maybe the Amazekey modchip just doesn't support autoboot?

Backup Wii games won't load on newer versions of the system menu.

Try a GameCube game. Those will load.
Correct. And just to add additional context so that OP understands what he meant. During the Wii's life, there was an vulnerability known as the 'trucha bug' or the 'signing bug', and as the name suggests, it exploits how the Wii signs titles/games and was only done on older IOS modules before 3.2. So, if your system was already updated past that, then you cannot run homebrew or Wii games that were fakesigned on burnt discs. You're only limited to running GameCube titles as they use a different disc layout.

If you want a detailed explanation of how this was discovered, then I suggest you read up the page on WiiBrew: https://wiibrew.org/wiki/Signing_bug
